Hostility against other hunters....

WHY is it that I sense some hostility of posters against others posting in this forum?
Is it because we hide on an ALIAS?

Sir, I hide from nobody, and I am pretty easy to find. Search a few threads and you probably will find my son's birthdates. I agree there may be hostility at times, but it is not always an under current of it on this board. Maybe you confuse us with someone else? I hold the members here just a notch above those on some other boards I have visited. Forgive the hostility, just sometimes I feel irked.

I have seen some of this hostility. At times I have probably been guilty. I post too much and that is a risk of posting too much, and getting sucked into debates. OK I have been in a muck-up or two on here with certain members but feel we do a good job keeping it civil knowing the other's stance on certain topics...Right Gilroy? :moose:

Much of the hostility I have witnessed comes on the off topic forum, but over there we all know to wear our big boy underwear (big girl panties to be inclusive ;) ). Over there a lot of political topics come up...hunting and angling are not only the domain of right wing Conservatives as a recently posted article suggests. :ninja:

I have been around long enough to know basically what to expect from whom, who will debate, who will be gruff crotchety, and what the leanings of certain members will be, and whose answer I will trust on certain topics. I know who is inviting, who is open, who is closed.

I also see the "elitism" some members get, in figuring their way of hunting is the only way, etc.

I also see the "shouting" when people don't know the regulations...It is funny when people get into it with COs, Ex-COs, Cops and ex-cops on laws and regulations etc, and think they know more because that is what their grand-pappy taught them 20 years ago.

Some of the topics I get involved in would be better discussed over beers....but the forum works too. :thumbup:

Some of us just know when we see a topic, what is going to happen, as there is a LOT of repetition, hence the "popping some corn and opening a beer" type of posts.

Do I hide behind my handle? I have used it on a few different forums, I have relayed where I live, where I am from, what caused me to move, what I do for a living, photos etc. So although my name is not out there (except on PMs I am kind to include my name) much of my info is.

Because the internet can be a very dangerous place,on any social media website,using a web/user name is basic computer personal security. Nothing we put on any of these sites is considered private or confidential,even some "secure" sites aren't all that secure. There's no end to the "crackpots" with an axe to grind or psychologically unbalanced people whom,given the opportunity,could do serious damage to personal reputations and/or grievous injury to "prove a point" over any inadvertent or percieved slight. Even with a simple name and general area of residency,anyone can be found using any number of very simple techniques. Enjoying comaraderie of like-minded people on a website such as this one is a wonderful thing,but,we must always bear in mind that what we read,perceptions we develop over time may not actually be real,at all. Always excercise great caution. Keep personal stuff OFF the internet,no matter what site you happen to be using.

I usually enjoy almost all the discussions even the overly passionate and expressive ones. Of couse, I tend to not take much personally (even all-out personal attacks) so it may be easier for me than some.
Also, I'm typically more open to different points of view than most on here and can actually be swayed.

Case in point; coyote hunting. I've never been against it, but never really saw a need for it either. I grew up in a part of Ontario where coyotes were simply more myth than mammal. We never saw them or any sign of them. As a nature lover with an affinity for predators, I actually really liked everything I read/heard about the resourceful critters.

However, the opinions and knowledge shared on oodmag forums (not the ridiculous hyperbole "the only good yote is a dead yote" kind) helped open my eyes to the greater concern and need to keep these animals in check, province-wide.
So now I've gone from not seeing a point to hunting them to actively considering trying a few coyote hunting methods this winter.

Do you think its easy to be a " legend " and always " right " ? . Well let me tell you it isn't and they are called " PICKEREL " not walleye . LOL

I don't post often in the hunting section because there's not a lot to add after most people give advice. I have gotten I to with a guy on here who called me out about calling the cops on trespassers and another guy that thought I'm disgusting for keeping a limit if fish. I answered a post last year in the upland section had a guy pm me about how wrong I am and he's shot more birds then I ever have seen, at the time I posted I was doing a trident evaluation for berreta but didn't want to tell him that. I've been lucky to be employed as an upland guide, have a great dog, fish a few days a week, has browning and Redwing tackle prostaff, and always try to answer and help be use I've received a ton of help from you all on here. I've also got to know quite a few members from here personally and will be mean to guys like sawbill because hes old, il tease woody for being a French Newfie, il argue politics with Joe anytime, make fun of roe+'s leaky boat, and would expect them to do the same to me. At the end of the day most people on here are not nameless guys hiding behind a keyboard, they are guys that will hunt and fish with you to learn and help you learn.


Also I'm Paul Devlin, I'm huge in Japan look me up sometime lol.

I would'nt go so far as to say you're huge in Japan. We've all seen you whiz off the deck at Woodys.
