im sorry but I feel that this post is steering people wrong....first of all I do not target oos fish....but if by accident I catch one and someone is taking pics of me quickly releasing it that does not make me a criminal....it is NOT illegal for someone to take pics while I release it...possing for pictures and delaying the release on the other hand is....theres a difference! .....I just hooked into an approximatly 55" musky on the weekend while pike fishing and my son was taking pics while me and another guy quickly released it....he got one ok pic that I have no shame in showing off....it was a spawned out female and she swam away with ease....I even hung around for another half hour to make sure she stayed down!.....
my daughter and i spent the long weekend in a shiny bass boat chucking spinnerbaits and jerk baits and spoons up shallow......we got some nice pike for supper...............i do it every spring and at least once a year i have some Ahole come up and preach to me about bass season being closed...........
Since the shortage of COs in the field has made most hunting and fishing self-policed - the question you have to ask yourself is "would you be doing this if the CO was right there?"
Spinnerbaits would not be anyone’sfirst choice for bedding bass.... tube, jig or creature bait dragged into the nest would be. Lots of data suggests fishing during the spawn does not impact a fishery however catch and keep certainly does. If you do get bit typically the smaller male bites first with the larger female still guarding the nest. You traditionally have to keep the male in your livewell to get momma to bite.
any decent bass angler would not target bass in early spring on the beds with a spinnerbait...........they would get alot more flipping critter baits or drawing corolina rigged worms threw the nest............bass will try to kill or remove anything that comes into his nest to protect his babies.............
the problem is those who are on here blasting bass boat anglers up shallow throwing what is perceived as bass lures don't have a friggin clue........
I think I've seen enough of them working the bass nests and pulling in bass after bass that to know what they are doing. When you're 'pike fishing' and pull up 10 'accidental' bass in a row, you're not really fishing for pike are you. But I guess in every field of hunting and fishing, there are those that think that the laws don't apply to them.
I totally support where you are coming from Werner.
However nowhere did RatherB say he enjoyed a meal of pike from the shallows and also had fun C&Ring a pile of bass , therefore I really don't think he deserved the implication that he or his daughter is an anal sphincter...
There are lots of shallow water locations that are not suitable bass nesting areas but are good early pike waters.
The issue is "targeting" OOS. In this case I think that means that if you catch 2 or 3 bass in a row from the same area and don't move on then you qualify as a puckered penny.
when i pull a bass my next cast is to the other side of the boat...........and i cruise over the area i got the bass to see what he was sitting on so i can avoid it further down the shore line...........unless you are down riggin lakers in 80 FOW your going to run into a bass or two.........by no means does it mean you are targeting them with a spinnerbait............
if you see people repeatedly throwing to a spot holding OOS bass then call the tips line.........don't come on a forum and run your mouth about guys in bass boats up shallow targeting bass when they could and most often are targeting pike...........
