Jeff ,Your post is right on,and you are correct with what You stated.

This is the right place to talk about this !Do not stop educating Your customers or anyone else-many people do not know any better then listen to all those hypes. They need your guidance -and they need it from other down to earth bow hunters too.

All in all-even in this forum there are few of those they believe-and they stand up for that with vengeance-that shooting at live animals at 60-80 yards with archery equipment is a right thing to do.And they press ,that it is each hunters choice to do it, or to not do it.

Which is actually a fact!

However taking ,encouraging, advertising or advocating those shots is -short of better,or more politically correct word-not fair to the animal.

I mean that the MNR cave in to some folks who complain about shotgun use or rifle use and then shut down WMU for gun hunters.That then forces some hunters to only use bows as its the only game in town.To compound that spare time is at a premium these days and if you have sat a few days in the cold,the only days you might have to spare,you might take that last minute long shot.

Funny, or alarming, that not one word here has been mentioned on the amount of animals that have been gut shot or wounded and never recovered due to shooting well beyond their comfort zone...

IMO....Bow hunting means getting in close, that's what it's all about....Can I shoot (kill something) with my crossbow out to 60/70yds accurately, yes.... but that isn't my idea of bow hunting....If I really need the meat, I will hunt harder or go to the grocery store.

Keep informing, maybe some of them will learn to improve their hunting skills instead.....

This is not limited to crossbows.

Rifle, shotgun, compound bow, etc, etc, etc, you can use anything to make a bad shot and it happens all the time.

Guys who are no good at shooting a target at 100 yards will take shots on running at deer at 200 and 300 yards.

This has been beaten to death over and over again.

I am fairy accurate shooting at a TARGET with my compound up to 70 yards, but would NEVER chance a shot at an animal at more than 30 yards. You owe it to the animal to take an ethical shot every time. Even at this distance as the OP said, things can go horribly wrong.

I think it was a darn fine educational rant and maybe it might smarten up all those Robin Hood wannabees. Well done!

This is my first post ever on the bowhunting forum. After 30 plus years working in the field and dealing with hunters......you wouldn't believe most of the stories I could tell.
Regardless, this is about a good friend of mine who worked at a hunting/fishing shop in the Sudbury area. He too could go on all evening about horror stories related to him in confidence, during the day from hunters and anglers alike. The point is this: we'll read a post on here about some unethical hunter and we'll see the retort that he's no hunter, he a poacher. Well, I beg to differ. He's unfortunately a very large proponent of our hobby and is most definitely a hunter, especially in the eyes of non-hunters.
Bottom line, archery or rifle hunter. Makes no difference. There's bad and very bad in both groups.
