The guys they caught on video trying to set the train on fire while it was moving should have been arrested and jailed....nary a word on that investigation, if any was even conducted. Does appear that the police turn a blind eye when crimes are committed by the protesters during these blockades.Quote:

Without accusing anyone here of anything in particular, those that have an opinion on how to best handle our relationship with the First Nations groups within Canada, have you actually read any of the treaties? Or, for that matter, any legitimate writings regarding the treaties?
Every time these conflicts arise there is an unlimited supply of opinions on what we should do, or what the various groups must want however I find sometimes find historical context and understanding missing from the discussions. I think, just maybe, that if all the sides involved in this current lobster dispute came into the situation with the intention to calmly sort things out we might actually get somewhere, and just MAYBE even set some sort of example of how to resolve these situations in the future. Because frankly, this is just the start of things.
For anyone interested, I recommend reading "On being here to stay" by Michael Asch. Its one of the few books i've come across regarding the treaties that provides a clear historical context (from BOTH sides of the treaties) and maybe gives us the best idea of what the treaties were really agreeing to without any obvious underlying dog in the fight.
Again, not accusing or implying anything regarding all the fine folks here. Just want to make sure we are coming into this with a little bit of reason. I think the state of things these days is a pretty solid example of where we get by only bringing emotions and baseless opinions to the conversation.
In reviewing comments on Michael Asch's book I saw it quoted " Asch proposes a way forward based on respecting the “spirit and intent” of treaties negotiated at the time of Confederation," I think that should open up the discussion for both parties in those agreements. Was the "intent" of the treaties to have First Nations sucking at the the teat of Government to the tune of $Billions annually in perpetuity ?? Is holding today's Government financially responsible for the reconciliation of wrongs purported 100's of years ago the result of true wrongs or just greed ? The government says the stocks are steady the lobster fishers say they are down. These people know the sea better then the Government.
If they say stocks are down you can bet they are down.
A few weeks ago the chief said he had a solution that he felt was good for both sides, he said they should reduce the number of traps that the commercial people can use and increase the bands. Not sure if it was suppose to be funny, but I don't think the other side thought it was funny.
Also could be serious since the Mohawks from Quebec/Ontario are down there with rifles. If there is bloodshed it will be the FN and Government who caused it.
A treaty is a contract, signed by both the Bands and the Canadian government. One side cannot break a contract just because they want to. Try that with any other lawful agreement. They were given those contracts in exchange for land. Simple really, if we don't want to uphold the treaty, then give them back the land. Can't have it both ways. The way it stands now ,if the government won't give them the land, then we will pay them billions a year till we do. If the Bands would rather have the land than the money, what can you do , they have a legally binding contract.
There is a difference between feeding your family and selling at least to the best of my knowledge, but then what do I know I'm not a union boy.

The problem is what ever is given to the fn is never enough, they always want more. They have all the luxuries of modern day, heat hydro, motorized, etc. Maybe they should be paying taxes for all the modern living luxuries they have. They no longer live in teepees and ride horses. When they don't get their way they commit criminal acts knowing they are exempt from prosecution. Does they indian act exempt them from committing criminal acts that cripple our economy?
