Yep a sling, not a slingshot. Our first slingshots we made with coat hangers, 4 of the heavy postman's elastics and the tongue of an old shoe. Had a riot.

Anyone remember Thierry la Fronde. I can just remember watching it in the early 60's. I was amazed that I actually remembered the name of the show lol. Funny how that works sometimes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thierry_la_Fronde.

Oh, I want to make a sling again. A section of bicycle inner tube, a couple lengths of bailing twice and a decent rock. My uncle and I made them when I was a kid, he was really good with it, would knock down pigeons in the barn without putting anything through the tin.

There is a older guy who helps out my neighbour a lot, he is from the Ukraine and was able to get out before being killed in the 30s. His family ended up poor in Germany and they would use nothing but rocks to get their dinner. They would push the sugar beets for rabbits like we push a bush for deer, a few of the better trained and generally older kids would stand watch at the end of the fields and with just a handful of rocks would pick off the rabbits as they bolted. He said his brother was a 7 for 10 type of shot, how many here are 7 for 10 with a shotgun on a running rabbits, that would be something to watch for sure.

Not sure I understand this comment. Are you saying wingshooters are less accurate than sling shots???? By the way my money is on the shotgun.

I like most of you grew up with many slingshots. I can remember getting my first 'commercially' made one. It was like wow....I'm really set now! No more old wooden broken slingshots.

Fast forward to adult hood I really can't see myself using one, certainly not to hunt with. I wouldn't trust my ability or accuracy to do the job but more importantly because my ethics(that weren't in place as a youngster) would prevent me.

We've often seen the thread 'would a 22 be good enough for'..... Sure that little cartridge has disposed of a lot of things But I now come from the camp that says use the proper caliber/weapon for the game we hunt. It's always been my belief that those are the guiding ethics which make us good hunters and demonstrates our respect for the game we hunt.

I'd probably still enjoy using my old slingshot but probably only for plinking....trying to hunt jacks..... guess I'd die of starvation!

What he is referring to is that a slingshot at a stationary target with a 1/4" round ball has less chance of creating a cripple as wingshooting. You hit it and kill it or you miss it, is that not better than putting a dozen pellets into non-critical areas, or worse, into the guts and cause a slow and painful death.

Thanks Fox for the explanation but I think I'll still take the shotgun, not sure my aim with one 1/4'' ball is good enough.

I can't wrap my head around people hung up about 'ethics' in killing rats and squirrels. Killing a rat 'humanely' ...seriously ??

I'm not hung up on killing rats and squirrels in the least, the thread has mentioned more than just them if I read correctly. I certainly didn't say anything about killing a rat humanely or otherwise either.

If you can't wrap your head around my ethics...then fair enough, they're mine not yours. I'm talking about ethics in a broader sense.

Going back to your statement, I have to say I really disagree. Your conclusion rests that it's either a hit or miss. In reality it could be a miss or a hit somewhere non lethal...say shoulder which means it's definitely not better than a dozen pellets put into non critical areas. Either way you may have to finish the job.
The above would not prevent me from using a slingshot, I just think I'm not very good with one.
