If the importer can secure a domestic source quickly at a lower price, then, tariffs will work sooner rather than later. The "trickle down affect" will come back to the Canadian supplier resulting in lost orders, lower production and in many cases, layoffs sending the unemployment rate up. If the American importer can't secure a domestic source at a lower cost (fat chance or they already would have) ,then, they're faced with two options....bite the bullet until or shut down their operations. My point is,they have much more to lose with tariffs than without. For Canadian exporters, the only choice is to either scale back operations or apply some foresight, seize the opportunity to secure international markets abroad and supply them with lucrative contracts to keep their businesses running. When the Americans realize they're on the poopy end of the stick and ask to re-establish supply lines, our answer should be "Sorry,we're maxxed out. Can't help you".
