Handgun carrying on your own property? bear defense.

If I felt the need I would definitely take a shot gun with slugs. Shooting handguns like you see in the movies aint as easy as it seems so unless you are proficient with a revolver in a suitable bear stopping chambering you may do more harm than good.

I just contacted the RCMP to get them to define a gun cabinet vs a gun vault, somehow I do not believe that they will.

You are expecting them to give you their definition? Are you sure you're not one of JT's advisors?

Option #1 : Antique handgun with hard to find ammo, no firearms license required.
Option #2 : 12 gauge with 8.5" barrel (27" overall length) and easy to find slugs, non-restricted PAL required.

Your other options are illegal or impractical.

Depending on who the peace officers are in your area both of these options may stir up some grief for you.

Both are 100% legal and I would have no problem with either, but your neighbour may call the cops on you for having that short shottie. Someone here mentions the Mare's leg, another cool option, another option your neighbour may think is not legal.

If you live well away from prying eyes both of these options and many others are 100% legal for protection in Ontario.

There is the chance of anyone calling the police on you no matter where you are or what firearm you're using whether you're deer hunting with a slug gun, coyote hunting with a rifle, or carrying a short shotgun on your own property. As long as you're legal, have at er.


I REALLY wish firearms owners would stop this "Oh, you better be careful and hide it or someone might call the cops" crap. Stop spreading this filth and putting the idea into shooters heads that we should be hiding our legal activities. In doing so you're simply making the anti's happy. Be proud of your hobby, don't hide it!


Anyone who thinks we should hide legal activities has been listening to or reading the anti propaganda bit too much...

I agree 100%, just putting the facts out there.

People draw less attention when there rifle is a bolt action with a wood stock than a semi with a black stock.

It is not right, but it is reality.

I think that it would be a good idea to know who lives around you and get a feeling for how they are.

I know that when I lived in town I did not have my deer on the hood of my car and drive back to my house. would it have been legal, yes, but it stirs up emotions in some people that I would much rather not deal with.

I currently can hunt in my back yard, it is a small property but since I am not close to a place of worship or a school I am within my rights to hunt there. I also have other places to hunt. Since I want to keep a good relationship with my neighbours I doubt I will be shooting at geese or turkeys in the backyard with my 12ga at 7am, even though I am within my legal rights to do so.
