I was on the floor, I like to see what I'm buying. I told my wife before I left the cottage that I didn't want to pay more than $400 for it. There wasn't much else I really wanted that went for a realistic price.
The cottage is about 20 minutes away.

The 300 Win Mag and alike are not needed at 150 yards for moose and the additional gun weight and recoil tend to make hunters worse shots and therefore wound more game.

30-30 have killed lots of deer and plenty o moose short range but here is a little comparison for you.
First one is your 30-30 with a 160ftx at what the article author claimed;

So looking at those numbers the 243 would be a hell of a lot better choice but I still wouldn't chose it.
Your 30-30 is fine for 50 yards as a go to but these things are big animals so lets keep that in mind!
Do you remember "Blackwolf." Pretty sure he killed a moose at 700 yards with his 30-30. He could also shoot dime size groups at 1000. Just messing with you Rob. :joker::joker:Quote:

Jack, is a 308 Win an acceptable round for moose at 300 yards? If so then a 30-30 160gr FTX is acceptable at 150 yards, it is the same bullet at the same velocity hitting in the same area.Quote:

The article talks about using 5 different rifles, including the Marlin and Win 94. The Win 94 with a 24in barrel runs around 2375fps and the Marlin 336 runs around 2358fps with a 20in barrel, so the marlin does not lack much for the 4in and this is explained by the rifling type, which brings it back in line with the Hornady factory numbers in a 20in marlin gun.
There was just a guy on this sight using a Marlin gun, reloading and with that 20in barrel was pushing the 160gr bullet over the speed of the factory specs from Hornady, so it is possible to hit those numbers.
We are just looking strictly on numbers, a good bullet that is heavy enough moving into the rib cage and transferring the proper energy. No, the 30-30 is not a high end moose gun but I am sick and tired of people saying it is a useless relic, the round kills and it does it every single season and with the new technology it has made this 50 yard moose gun at best and 100 yard deer gun into a heck of a lot more if you do your part.
Jack, I like your muzzle loader threads, this is similar to that. You are building from something that used to be very limited and looking at the potential with all the advancements. If everyone looked at the 50 cal muzzle loader as it once was then it is no better than a 50 yard deer gun (round ball, buckhorn sights) but that is not the case with the advancements that have been made. Powder is a lot better for the centerfires, faster speeds from less pressure, the FTX bullet has done amazing things for grandpas hold lever gun.
If you do not think that the 1500 ft lb number with a 30 cal bullet is a good enough threshold that is fine, but the 30-30 is not anemic.
Species, the OP probably has stopped paying attention, that is fine. This was in response to the poster who said the 30-30 was a marginal deer gun and absolutely useless on moose, like the moose have developed armour plate in the last 50 years. If they feel the need to go out and buy a 375 H&H to shoot bambi that is fine, go ahead and destroy your shoulder but please don't wound that animal. Shoot something accurately and confidently and keep your range to what the gun is capable of and make a good ethical shot. I am sick and tired of seeing guys show up at camp with the same box of shells they bought 10 years ago and not shooting all summer because they are too cheap or their rifle kicks too much. You owe it to the animal to make that ethical shot. If you only have a 30-30 and you want to moose hunt there are options but those do not include a 500 yard shot across a cut or beaver pond, don't put yourself into a situation to even contemplate that, hunt in an area where 150 yards is the maximum shot you can possibly take and hit the animal in the boiler room.
That being said, you will probably not get a shot at anything but a calf in Ontario anyway.

I read the article. You can't compare a Win 94 at 20 inches to a marlin 20". I saw the numbers the guy recorded and great but most common Winnie's are 20". Just wouldn't pick up the 3030 first. I guess maybe I go heavy on power but when I look at that big animal, I want to use an appropriate round whether I see it at 50 or 300 yards. Just my opinion.
Species - the ml build success is 50/50 success now.
My brothers TC encore was out at the range and with a 300 grain pill and 60 grain load I got one hole at 100 without the bullets being sized specifically for that gun. Velocity averaged 2540 fps.
My long range build has issues. When I got the match barrel it had a choked part at the crown of the barrel. Could not load or index bullets right. At first I thought it was a burr but I had a good gunny dig into it and the problem was just back of the crown so trim and recrown was completed. He then found a constriction in the barrel a few inches back.
Got it home cleaned it then sized bullets perfectly. Now they loaded really well at muzzle and I could find the right index but found the constriction at 4.1 inches down the barrel extending to almost 10 inches back.
Shot it on Saturday and 2 MOA was about what it could do. Barrel is no good.
