I applaud those who feel the need to feed deer however I think that winters such as these are natures way of controlling populations, and renewing the land and habitat. We as humans feel we can do this better than mother nature but in the end she will prevail. In fact she has been trying to control the human populations for eons. In the end another ice age will take care of what we have done to the planet and the process will start over again.

At the feed store we're probably still going through about 1 m/t per week of deer feed (corn-whole/cracked, corn & oats and with molasses). It's the same people week after week and they don't mind spending the money, almost like a family affair to feed and watch the deer. Right or wrong…?? They started to feed them and haven't stopped which a good thing. Spring will be here soon enough.

Severe Winter Puts Ontario's Deer Herds at Risk
White-tailed deer in parts of Ontario are experiencing one of the worst winters in recent memory.
"Deep snow, hard crusts and frigid temperatures could result in significant mortality of adult deer and the loss of this spring's fawn crop," says OFAH Senior Wildlife Biologist Mark Ryckman. The MNR reports that most deer entered this winter in really good shape thanks to an abundance of natural foods in 2013; however, it remains likely that this year's harsh winter conditions will still have an impact on many of central and northern Ontario's deer herds.
In 1995, the OFAH established the DeerSave Fund to help members, clubs and partners deliver emergency winter deer conservation activities, such as browse cutting, trail breaking and emergency feeding. Mild winters have limited the need for emergency winter deer conservation in recent years, but the DeerSave Fund has been called upon when needed to provide targeted funding to aid struggling herds.

"We may not be in an emergency situation yet, but it is looking more and more likely that intervention will be required somewhere in the province," said Ryckman. The OFAH is initiating discussions with MNR regional biologists to determine areas of the province that would benefit most from winter conservation efforts. In the meantime, concerned conservationists can help deer by packing down trails in areas frequented by deer, and by cutting preferred browse species (maples, birch, dogwood, sumac, hemlock, cedar, etc.).
"Conservationists can also help by contributing to the OFAH DeerSave Fund so we are ready to provide help when and where it is needed most," added Ryckman.
Like other outdoor activities, it remains critically important to respect private property and keep safety in mind at all times when performing winter conservation efforts. The Federation only endorses deer feeding in emergency situations, and only according to science-based MNR guidelines.

So OFAH will wait for the MNR experts to tell them when and were feeding is needed. Riiiiight.
This is ONLY time i have heard that the OFAH will rely on the mnr scientist , usually they are attacking there science and trying to discredit them

I sidetracked the thread ,sorry . 270wsm . What is the science or where does it come from ? What a pencil pushing biologist sitting in a chair ? The OFAH was like a UNION at one time to hunters ,fishers and trappers in ONTARIO . I'm still a believer , indirect supporter of the OFAH . i also think they have SOLD us out ,, there was a guy named Iggy called it years ago .Quote:

This is why people should look in to the feeding program here in the Huntsville/Magnetawan/Parry Sound area. There is a feeding progrm that runs every year in these areas and it is a tax deductable oraganization.

They do not answer to the MNR and the OFAH will not give food from their DeerSave Prog unless the MNR blesses it. This DeerSave prog. is a joke, where does this money sit.
People donate money for deer feed and in my opinion they want the deer fed not money sitting in an account while deer are down.
This wwfp feed the deer every year and it is run by volunteers so all money goes in the deer herds belly.
I believe we need to help the deer herds out well before some decides it is a harsh winter.
