The difference between immigrants then and immigrants now is the presence of the welfare state, which we all pay for. With the welfare state it is difficult to differentiate between the givers/workers and the takers/non-workers.
When my grandparents came over you either worked or starved. With the welfare state there isn't a real incentive to become a productive member of society. I am all for a hand up but not a hand out and liberal policies usually lean far towards the never ending hand out.

I never said it was primarily immigrants. I was just pointing out that this is now available to them. Spend some time in Northern Europe and you will see what I am talking about, immigrants can work the system as good as the locals.Quote:

When it is the faceless state giving the hand outs it is much easier to take without giving back or feeling a need to change.
It still is in many cases that churches or christian communities still help immigrants or the less fortunate at least the community I have been associated most of my life . I only now of one person that was on welfare, went back to school and later became a director at Hiram Walkers Distillery .
