I think your providing proof that wedge issue,s work,we shall have to await the results.I must say I have warmed up to Premier Ford,I think he is doing a good job, might even change my vote Provincially,I think his fight with the teachers and union's might have tamed him a little.
Thems fighting words. People forget, words have power.
Happy to see Alberta’s government is taking a stand. Ours? Nothing really but a weak safe rebuke.
Jason Nixon
Today I issued notice of a motion expressing opposition to the Government of Canada’s undemocratic and unwarranted attack on thousands of law-abiding gun owners across Canada, including Alberta. As well as starting the process for Alberta’s own Chief Firearms Officer.
Without a single vote in House of Commons, the federal government has chosen to arbitrarily ban 1,500 previously legal variants of firearms. This unilateral decision seeks to make criminals of thousands of fully licensed and responsible gun owners; these are folks who have received training, undergone criminal record checks, and paid good money to comply with Canada’s already comprehensive federal regulations.
This ideological targeting of law abiding Canadians is wrong and heavy-handed. Our United Conservative team campaigned on a pledge to respect responsible gun owners who have done nothing to deserve being treated like criminals. In fact, we issued a motion in the fall asking the Assembly to recognize and support the ability of Albertans to lawfully and in a responsible manner own and possess firearms
We call on the federal government to stop playing politics with this issue, and instead focus on measures that will make Canadians safer. It makes far more sense to target the illegal gun smugglers who are arming gangs and fueling violence, than to waste untold millions on buying back legal firearms from responsible, trained, and fully licensed owners. In addition, we have called on the Government of Canada to bring back tough mandatory sentences for criminals who are convicted of endangering Canadians with illegal guns.
Failing a full reversal of the federal government’s unwarranted gun grab, today’s motion lays the groundwork to allow for the replacement of Ottawa’s hand picked Chief Firearms Officer with a one designated by the Government of Alberta. Moving forward we will take every step to assert provincial jurisdiction under the federal Firearms Act.
I should note that the Alberta Legislature has previously voted to recognize and support the ability of Albertans to lawfully and responsibly own firearms, and to use them accordingly. Today’s motion gives us the tools to defend provincial jurisdiction from an over reaching federal government that is clearly more concerned with politics than public safety. This is important. We didn’t just come here to talk the talk. We came to walk the walk.
Gilroy, Wedge issues can work.
But you need to understand, and know which way the winds will blow. This is anything but certain. The shooting took place in NS. Yes, traditionally a Liberal source of seats. But its not “the center of the Universe”...And...these days....theres thousands dying, and thousands more, 100s of thousands more going broke...And on top of all that, the “middle” on the issue is waking up to the fact, we arent the problem. Organized crime is...And if you doubt that ( the public’s epiphany) why are Blair and JT paying it lip service...and the middle will see that too...
Despite the electorate being split on abortion, no right wing politician in their right mind, will table that, unless some other world thing happened, that they could confidently...open that Pandora’s box. Harper did because he was confident....that the public was waking up to the fact, it was a do nothing waste of money...<<The very arguement that was used during those battles.
And at the end of the day, win or lose....You’ve torched and alienatated half the country..That’s why they are called wedges
By the way, that E-poll.
150,000 signatures in 3 days...
Lol, I avoided commenting on that Canadaman, because this isnt the forum for that. :)
That said, I think this is the first time since 2003 all the Unions are thankfully shutting their yaps. I was a little surprised they quietly agreed to terms. But, the public is pissed that we dont have PPE, Ventilators, PSWs, enough RNs and more. I know my circle of friends is small compared to the world. One, during the crap in late Feb said to me...You dont think they are that important? I said No, I dont. There are more important things and people than Teachers....She too is now pissed about why we dont have the $$ and hardware..
If your a teachers Union, what would you be doing today? Taking what you can get and running for cover. That day and reckoning is coming. But wont be until the dust settles.
Sometimes I marvel at the way the world works. This making headlines this morning.
Hopefully, things won’t get too political. There is a specific forum for that.
This does directly relate to the bans and OIC. So I’m just going to link it. So it can be read and thought about.

Interesting read not supporting the ban from the CBC
Nice read Sam.
The last few days I’ve been pointing out to people on FB, that by calling for bans, all they are doing is taking away from the real problems.
Dawned on me this morning. This latest tragedy. 23 killed by an illegal gun.
It’s their fault. It’s on them. The “Gilroys”
For 20 years we have tried to get the focus on gangs, our justice system etc.
And the next time some kid is shot in the streets of TO with an illegal weapon, and the next time someone uses one to kill 2 girls on the Danforth, or 22 in Nova Scotia
I’m putting the blame where it belongs.
You’re absolutely right Jben. Those that vote for liberals support their soft on crime mentality and bs attack on law abiding citizens. Limited Law enforcement assets and money should target criminals not people who have passed safe handling courses, use safe storage and have been cleared by a rigorous licensing process. So yes, absolutely the Gilroys of the world support “not targeting” criminals by supporting what that self entitled imbecile does.
They can round up all the black rifles and shotguns and all the handguns and everybody knows it will have no affect on gangs and criminals. They will still flow through the border through reservations near Montreal and people will still get killed. The other side of that coin is gun shops, gunsmiths and gun clubs will close and thousands of honest people will lose their livelihoods. Tru-dough doesn’t really understand what it is to lose a job but it’s devastating. Maybe one of his handlers could explain that to him.
