Made in Canada. Making the effort?

During my renovation about 7 years ago I was replacing my front door and wanted a pre-hung wooden door. I shopped around in Ontario and I was amazed how expensive they were - starting at $4,500 all the way up to $9,500 and that was 7 years ago! I was talking to a guy that was doing a renovation down the street and he put me on to a door company in Seattle, WA. I called the company and ordered a mahogany 3 panel shaker door with frosted glass & matching brick mold for $2,650 USD - shipped for free anywhere in the US. I had it shipped to Buffalo and zipped across the boarder and picked it up and brought it back and paid my taxes at the boarder (no duty). All in I was under $4,000 Cdn for a door that would have cost me $5,500 - $6,500 Canadian.

I am not anti Canadian..........& I would buy Canadian all things being equal. But I definitely double check all my larger purchases before I buy to see if there are better options in the US. I am only 50min from the boarder for I can zip across and be back in no time.

This reminds me of the time (15 yrs ago?) I bought my phoenix excalibur crossbow.... Basspro in Vaughan wanted $400 plus tax at the time...
I ended up buying it in the states, having it shipped to my home for $325 all in.... Could never figure out how something made in Canada can be cheaper if bought in the states. Sometimes Canadians shoot themselves in the foot.....(Canadian guides that cater to the US also should get some mention too)

Yup I don't mine buying in Canada but at the bare bones they must treat me as well as they do in the US, the product must be as good as quality or better I don't mine paying 5 - 10% more in Canada but when we hit stuff like 100 - 500 % more sorry not acceptable and no I won't pay more then 10% extra.

Canadian guides and Canadian fishing lodges are a great example. I wonder how the fishing lodges, that charged customers in $USD (Canadians included), are doing after this last season? My gut feeling is that the boarder will remain closed until the majority of Canadians are vaccinated......which will take the better part of the summer the way things are progressing.

Based on the current rate it will be 10 years, based on the rate Trudeau said we would get the vaccines about 5 years.

I was on another US based hunting forum and there was a Canadian advertising for bear hunts.........I'm not sure if I would be leaving deposits for a hunt anytime soon.

Well no bears out now .... How about a Muskoka Bears review though.... I got two pair of the pyjama pants and am very pleased, I would suggest one size up since they did shrink a bit and so they are a relaxing fit. Marks sells the same type but the M.B.'s are thicker, softer and much better stitched than the ones my wife got from Marks for me last winter. Shopping from the couch does have some advantages, you don't expect them that moment and you can scout for brands not carried in the brand stores but are likely better quality, price is more obviously but 1 pair of these already crossed the free shipping line.

The Canadian Tourist industry has always geared itself around the American client as far back as I can recall. Its a no-brainer going after a market with 10 times the buying power then toss in exchange bonus which is has been as much as 45 percent at one time. There's been the odd lean year for outfitters when the Cdn dollar has been higher than the greenback, then there was the cancellation of the spring bear hunt where outfitters had to return deposits and now Covid. But I'm sure they'll survive this latest kick in the butt.
Bottom line though is that by catering to the American market outfitters are bringing in new money to our economy, not just having Canadian money going in circles. That is a win win all around.

With the talk of people getting tough with China, and when I saw some saying it and I stopped laughing I went to read my email and saw Muskoka had a flash sale on, so I thought it seemed time to bring "Made IN Canada" back to the top.

I wish that Canadians would rally behind a “made in Canada” campaign like the US does with their “buy US” campaign.

It would be nice for news agencies to pick up on things like this.
