My older brother and a school mate of his spoke of the same thing in the secondary school they attended. However by the time I reached secondary school about six years after, all such range programs were done away with. What was lost, was an effect way of giving youth an understanding of firearm safety and the responsible use of firearms. What a horrible oversight and mistake!!! Now they are left to their own discretion about the use of firearms, and we have seen what that can result in.

... and the government and education systems are doing the "training" now. What the high schools need now is a Common Life course or something like that, how to change a tire, check the oil, introduction to fishing and hunting, how to make a budget, how to save.... problem is if there was such a course with the current agendas it would be theory, PETA (NOT People Eating Tasty Animals) based propaganda, sponsored by Walmart and Visa.....

The Liberal government spent less than 1/3 their keep kids out of gangs promised spending but is spending billions to seize the law abiding's property.... seems like their agenda is part of the problem.

The government and education systems are not doing the training now, especially when it comes to the safe handling and responsible uses of firearms. There is the Canadian Firearm Safety Course which is narrowly focused on those wishing to obtain a firearm licence. What's need is a broader focus course directed at educating the general public. Directed at the people who know little or nothing about the safe handling of firearms and the responsible use of firearm and keep demanding further gun control measures. They are so ignorant they believe whatever the Liberal tell them ( in order to get votes) about how safe they will be with more gun control or the gun control that is already put in place. To paraphrase Ralph Goodale there is nothing that can protect them from a lone wolf gunman, like the one who recently shot up the school down in Texas. If a gun can't be had legally, than there is always an illegal source.

I was referring to the educational system that educates the children actually with the government educational criteria and programs. A single high school credit where teens are taught to change a tire, the implications of mishandling a firearm, budgets etc.

The Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course is still on the books but may be completely useless at this point.

Actually there is some great elements in the Canadian Firearm Safe Course that could be expanded upon and serve as prior material for educating school age children. I suspect many books have been written on the topic of social responsibility amongst them the Bible. You know, the book people choose to pass on, because it might develop in them some moral scruples. Then there is the history of firearms and the roll they have played in our history, which leads into the contemporary uses of firearms and their roll in present day society. Another part of the course is the mechanical development of firearms and ammunition over a historical time frame. How they evolved from their rather primitive beginning to their present day forms. The material, of course, will have to be set up in an age appropriate way, but there is no reason why the study of the firearm cannot be used to establish a frame work of living with firearms versus the current irresponsible use of them and the fear factor that has been instill in people, about them. Plus educating the children is bound to have some of the ideas rub of on the parent generation. I still remember my parents attempting to explain me how long division was done.

My thoughts/wishes would be it was part of an anti-gang, it's just a tool if you use it wrong you get hurt introduction but the odds of something like that are about like a lottery ticket I think. I really am convinced that solving and preventing problems isn't what the Lib politicians want, they want to use the problem. Look at dropping the recent handgun sh** as soon as there is a tragedy. Another one in Canada and I could see semis, levers and pumps going the same way.

It's very unlikely gun safety is going to be taught in public schools. Even if it were it would take years before courses could be introduced which is certainly not going to be of any help against the current legislation.

I am less pessimistic about the future of firearms ownership in Canada. Other nations have banned handguns and assault rifles but continue to have well-established firearms and hunting communities.

The current legislation means I can continue to own and enjoy my handguns. Some clarity about the magazine restrictions would be helpful as limiting all long guns to 5 rounds would affect one of mine. Until there is clarity the typical moaning, groaning and rending of garments serves no purpose.

It use to be. Many Schools use to even have ranges for 22's and archery.

There are lots of school around that have storage rooms under the school that used to be rifle ranges. In Toronto Union Station, some firehalls etc. had ranges too, amazing how closing the ranges had such an effect on crime, seems like it went way up, not down. since then. Education and facts are the enemies of the left in regards to firearms seems clear and with the new long gun registry ... Canada firearm owners are f***** if the Libs stay in power and they will use it for fear mongering and paranoia. Hey maybe that's why the handgun ban, beside opportunism to distract from their behaviour and maybe another attempt to grab absolute power in the fall with an election again???

Without a specially approved license handgun ownership was banned about 88 years ago, assault rifles over 50 years ago... bolt action rifles, shotguns, .22 rifles and depending on the definition of magazine much of the shotguns and levers are what they are working on now.

Polysouvient (spelling?) are already calling the Cadex bolt action rifles assault weapons in the media so I would suggest you rethink your viewpoint, the evidence does not support it.
