Seems the OP is in between number 1 and 2. As I think most of us were wearing the same shoes at some point-Difference between myself and him was that compound crossbows shooting 460 fps didn't exist in my youth/early days.

Honestly I don't think anyone is going to get through to you with this one, but reading the other thread with your kill list from this year (congrats), how on earth did you feel the need to take a 70 yard quartering shot on a deer with a bow? You just needed that 5th deer? As said before, you will lose a deer one day taking shots like this, and you'll have to reckon with your ethics at that point. You are a new hunter which is great and getting that first one out of the way is always a good feeling. But nobody is impressed with your 70 yard Hail Mary.

Im surprised we have not heard any closing arguments or statements.

Well speaking for everybody is not a good idea and I am rather impressed by this 70 yard shot.Account indicated a good clean kill,this younger hunter is skillful and is using cutting edge technology.I know some guys who can,t hit the side of a barn door with a 30.06 and they have been hunting for 40 years.

Gilroy-encouraging low percentage shots may not serve the deer we love so much,and we are all after .

There is absolutely no need for this kind of encouragement-regardless that some other people can not shoot 30.06 well enough.
The issue with them is then-they need to learn to shoot well enough-or give up shooting at live beings altogether.

The OP can ripe great rewards with his expensive toy ,he wants to publicize with his success stories ,by other means(competition shooting,great YouTube videos etc) .
We all should try to strive to ethical hunting(even though ethics may mean different things to different people).We owe that to those living beings we are after.

For those who think this does not matter-perhaps time is to rethink that approach.

After all-no one needs to harvest a deer to survive.We all should agree on that .
If so-what is the point then taking Hail Mary shots???

Guessing you don't hunt with a crossbow or bow of any sort. Impressing a few who don't know any better was the intent of his post in the first place.

As you can see by the responses he got, most of us know the difference between a shot that is likely to kill a deer the majority of the time and getting away with something that was an otherwise poor decision.

I wasn't going to say anything... This has been an interesting thread to be sure...
As a relatively new hunter ( started last year at the ripe old age of 46 ) I know exactly where my skill set lies. I chose a crossbow to begin with as the learning curve was a lot less than a compound ( and guns aren't an option thanks to the local police taking all my dead father's guns--- long story and personally a heartbreaking one ).
To this date I haven't shot anything. I've been close on an open field stalk for a turkey but at 37 yrds and him quartering away I didn't feel comfortable. This wasn't because of the capability of the weapon ( Excalibur Grizzly ) but because of my own capabilities. I know my own limitations and I operate within them. Having said that every person will have a different skill set. Would I attempt a 70 yrd shot based on my equipment and skills ? No way but again that's me and my equipment.
For me I'm kinda glad I haven't filled my tag yet... I can keep going to the woods and escaping life for a bit til I do.
