And let's be honest here. The records, if they still exist, would be next to meaningless at this point in time. How many people have died since then, the guns sold or given away? How many have simply gotten rid of their guns, got new ones? Etc. etc..... It would show who had firearms the day before the registry was cancelled, not reliably, the day after.Quote:

Welsh's comments in post #71 are correct regarding the "notwithstanding clause" in the Charter. All provinces have this right,but,it's temporary and must be re-enacted every five years. However,that doesn't stop Quebec,Ontario or any other province from enacting a long gun registry within provincial legislation of their own like an addendum to the FWCA. So far,several other provinces have used it to enact their own laws,such as defending The Marriage Act in Alberta and The Languages Act in Quebec (the infamous Bill 101) among others. We need to remember that any long gun registry enacted in Quebec would only pertain to gun owners residing in that province and gun owners from outside Quebec entering and bringing their guns with them,particularily hunters and competition shooters.
I can't see Ontario getting into this because of it's tremendous start-up and ongoing maintenance costs which would never be recoverable or "revenue neutral". There may even be a huge hit to the bottom line of OMNRF from collapses in license sales as collateral damage from people getting out of the sport altogether besides the fact that she would face huge opposition to any provincial LGR proposal which would,without doubt,cause severe political ramifications down the road.
I don't think she cares what people think anymore. The financial experts told her it was cheaper to just borrow the money to lower her reported deficits than it was to sell off Hydro but she disregarded the advice. There is talk of interest rates going negative soon so borrowing has never been easier ( thank god). They proved the loss of revenue down the road from Hydro billing would be detrimental to us, again she didn't care. Polling proved that the majority of Ontarians object to selling off Hydro. Logic, hard data common sense mean nothing to her. Hydro is being sold off to PS unions at a discount likely and again it's payback to guarantee future support next election. Not convinced either that she would even face much protest if some "type" of registry happened. Gun owners are a minority and spread out over too many ridings to tip the vote. In other words we don't matter much. JT will facilitate and subsidize start up costs if she asks for it, guaranteed.
As was pointed out, 25% of gun owners are in Quebec... and look how the gov't is treating them. A new registry that has gone from $5,000.000 to $17,000,000 in 1 week. Here I will post the interview again.Quote:
