Here's one former LEO that stared down the business end of a firearm,twice. I'll guarantee that the type of firearm didn't enter the equation one iota. It tends to rivet one's attention to detail,in a heartbeat. It only takes one shot to ruin your day and it doesn't matter a hill of beans if it's a piddly little .22 or an AR. That argument is useless...........and foolish. Everything is predicated on the individual's intention and state of mind at the time who happens to be holding the firearm,never the firearm,itself.

What features specifically?

Have you ever shot one?

Full auto and semi are two very different things. Five shot clip and 30 round mag are also two very different things.

I personally would consider a fellow carrying a simple 18” barrel pump 12ga and buckshot with mal intent to be a heck of a lot more dangerous than a guy carrying a non restricted semi.

Or for that matter a fellow with a simple 22 and subsonic ammo with a bit of shooting talent.

Visual perception should not be confused with lethality.

It’s the person or criminal behind the gun that’s the problem.

The definition of "assault rifle" is uncontroversial, except among people trying to drag the discussion in the direction of futile wrangling.

Recent events in New Zealand stand as a warning that this strategy will no longer be productive. We are likely simply to see a move to regulate semi-automatic rifles in general.

I once responded on a forum to a guy who couldn’t figure out how a group of older veterans policing a town, armed with shotguns and bolt action SMLE’s were able to fend off a group of terrorists using AK 47. He seem to be happy with my response. I point out that firstly they were veterans who were taught to isolate their target and shoot accurately, while their adversaries were content to spray their ammunition around hoping for a hit. For close in work I point out that shotguns with a broad spread of buckshot cover considerably more area in one blast than individual rifle bullets which have to be focused in on their target.
Fire powder is certainly a consideration in an assault, the English apparently took advantage of it in their assault on the City of Quebec. On the Plains of Abraham they were apparently order to load their old brown Bess’s with two balls as oppose to one (effectively doubling their fire power) in order to meet the charge of the French. It appeared to have worked, their initial volley apparent pretty much decimated the ranks of their on coming foe.
