Hunting Back in the Day
For many of those who grew up in a small town one could get away with a lot while not raising an eyebrow. This is an older brother in Nov '61 waiting to board the westbound wayfreight for a winter rabbit hunt up the line. Missing in the pic is any hunter red which was only a suggestion at the time and the local swat team.. Attachment 42816

Great picture.
Feb '61? Where's the snow? What part of the country was this taken in?

I was hunting with my Grandpa in '61. Wearing red was rare even while deer hunting, besides,it shows as black in failing light. Hunting "accidents" were common. Somebody somewhere would get an a**ful of birdshot somehow. My family always hunted private farm land, either, our own or the neighbors. Everyone knew who and where others were hunting at all times. The only accident we had was when my uncle's shotgun fell over, discharged and flattened the tractor tire. Grandpa promptly wailed the crap out of him and made him walk home. When Grandma say him walking up the lane by himself,he was dumb enough to tell her what happened and she wailed on him, too. It never happened again. The standard rule after that was "don't piss off Grandma and Grandpa."

When I was discharged from the Army I ended up with a long fatigue jacket - it was brown but was the only warm clothes I had at the time - I had a pile cap with fur ear flaps - can you imagine going hunting dressed like that - didn't have any money to buy better clothes so I used what I had - didn't have any insulated boots either - I put rubber boots (we called them galoshes?) over my regular shoes - I remember my feet use to get so cold after standing awhile that I could hardly walk - in those days it was common to meet other hunters who would offer you a drink from the bottle of whiskey they had with them - at the time it was thought that the whiskey would keep you warm while hunting - today there is still a certain risk involved with hunting but no where near what it was in the old days

Great picture SB! An era gone by sadly? It brings back memories of going to the train station with my dad here in the Soo, to either pickup or drop off my grandfather when he would head up on his guiding trips at the lodge on Gavor Lk. I can still see his big green canvas packsack and rifle when he hoisted it up onto the baggage car.

Nice Pic and memories of days gone by.
Question: How many rifles does one need to shoot a rabbit, Elmer?

Good photo, remember back even early seventies after school walking through our village just north of Sudbury with the .410 over my shoulder going to local bush for birds . Gun was never in case and nobody said anything .
