Scope keeps dropping point of aim

So built myself a gun for long range shooting. It is a 300wm with Rem 700 action and barrel in a Cadex Defence chassis and Precision Armament muzzle brake. I put a Cabelas Covenant Tactical 6-24 FFP scope on it mounted with vortex rings. The gun is dead accurate but after every 40-50 rounds all of a sudden I can't even tell where I am hitting. When I put the laser boresighter back in my point of aim has shifted to the bottom left of the scope. I re-zero and am good for another 40-50 rounds or so then the same thing happens again. Would anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Is it a faulty scope? Or could it be an issue with mount? I torqued all screws to the proper amount and have double checked them

My guess is the scope can't handle the recoil. Cabela's scopes aren't known for being "high end" which is likely what you need.

Thats what I was kind of figuring. I was hoping it someone could find me a better answer lol but I was thinking after so much kicking it was bouncing the reticle out of place

I've had two cabelas scopes and returned them both. One would change the point of impact when the magnification changed. The other just wandered all over the place - badly.

Ya I have started to regret the purchase. I got it on sale for a good price and it came with a lot of features so I was hoping it would be at least decent to get me started. But I am now thinking I probably should have waited to spend a little more and get something with a better name to it. Sadly I didn't realize until long after the warranty and return period because I haven't been able to get out shooting much. I am currently thinking about buying a laser sight and mounting to the rifle and setting at a point of reference so that I can do quick checks and zero resets so it is still usable until I can get something better

Apologies in advance if this sounds rude but it isn't meant to. Your optic, as a rule of thumb (especially on the kind of rifle you built), should cost almost as much as your rifle, perhaps even more.

Cabelas scopes are not meant to be put in custom built rifles in large calibers. You need a quality built scope. It's like buying a Ferrari and then putting bargain basement oil into the engine. Not a recipe for happiness. At bare minimum go with a higher end Vortex or Primary Arms. You have essentially built yourself an F class custom rifle. That bad boy needs some serious glass. Buy once cry once. That rifle should last you the rest of your life and it deserves an optic that will really show-off what it can do. If you want to get something that you'll never have to worry about again ever you can go really high end like Schmitt and Bender or Nightforce.

Over the years I have have come to two conclusions regarding Cabelas:

1. If its on sale there is a reason for it
2. Anything labelled as tactical is not

agree with the rule of cost of gun is equal to or lower then the optics. I have good luck with the higher end Bushnell and their warrants are great. Had the opportunity to use the warranty after broke because it scoped the guy shooting the gun, that seemed to break it, but called Bushnell and they told me to pack it up and they paid the shipping both ways

Don't worry that did not come off as rude. This was never the intended long term scope for the gun it was just a cheap one to get me shooting. I don't have a lot of money and it took me three years to save up just to get the gun built. Since then I have had 2 kids and with the economy I had just never been able to save anything towards a nicer one. I had hoped the Cabela's scope was going to be of at least decent quality until I bought a Nightforce which is what I was hoping to eventually get, then I would transfer the Cabela's to my .243. But it does seem like the magnum calibers are too much for this scope.

Yes scope is not up to the task. That said, it never hurts to check your mounting from top to bottom. And by that I mean right down to removing and reinstalling even the bases, not just the rings. Make sure everything has a small dab of blue lock tight, and is torques to proper spec. I don’t know what rings you used from vortex, as I’m sure they have multiple types. For anything magnum I prefer steel rings, but I believe there are also several quality aluminum six hole rings that would probably do the trick. Seeing as you own it, I’d take it all apart and reinstall everything and shoot it again. But I’d be saving for a new scope all the while because the cabelas ones are fairly junky!
