Snowshoe hare down

This was a couple of weeks ago. There wasn’t that much snow so me and IHunt decided to go far a hare hunt. We pushed and kicked the cedars hard with not even a flush. Looking at each other thinking where did these things go we decided to hit the back of the property into thickets where we believe the hares use as an escape root. We usually don’t get in there because how thick it is and how hard it is to walk because of water and downed trees. With no tracks to follow we took a guess and pushed through. As we stopped to plan or next path I flushed a hare and took a quick snap shot but missed. We walked in the direction I last saw it and started to pan the area. I saw a slight flicker of the hares ear through some thick stuff and told IHunt I think I see the hare. I took the shot and didn’t know if what I saw was the hare. I was second guessing my self in what I saw so I pushed through the thicket and there he was hare down. We didn’t flush anything else after that. Looking good. Thought the numbers would be a bit higher was seeing the odd hare during the fall which was more than previous years.

Numbers haven’t rebounded in this area. It’s been more than 10 years so either I’m just a bad hunter or numbers are bad. I’ll stick with numbers being down lol

Ya will agree with that. Last fall was the first in a few years that I saw a hare.

Congrats on the hare, I was in Muskoka last Saturday and there were a ton of tracks but never saw a hare

Beautiful hare. I have only ever seen one in the woods around my place, and it was what the coyote's had left of it. I occasionally see tracks but not to often

Congrats... Rabbit stu....mmmmmm

I have noticed less rabbits as well. I hunt with a beagle, and spots that have always held rabbits are dry. Pretty disappointing season. Not that I need to shoot limits when I go out, but when you hunt with a dog you want to get on and chase. Even if you don't shoot, as long as the dog gets his run in I'm happy!
