Only get a lab if it is within the correct standard, not too big ,too tall, too small, too fat, too skinny and if you can find one with an otter tail buy it.
My customer has 2, she loves them, doesn't hunt them so can't attest to that. What I can say is, I think she got a dud, 1 just finally started swimming, the other still won't. Portugese "walk the water line" dogs she's got :)
My daughters best friend has a Portuguese water dog and its very stupid.

I have not hunting with the Portuguese Water Dog but have spent quite a bit of time with the breed and they are willing to please there master. Very biddable. I see no reason that without training they could not be a good breed in the field as they are in the home. Do your research. Good luck
