Looking for recommendations

Hi everyone,

I am looking to purchase a yellow lab towards the end of may/starting of June. I am a teacher in nunavut but live in the Kingston area in the summer. My Fiance is from Windsor so we often travel back and forth between the two areas. I am looking for suggestions for breeders within the area along that 401 corridor. I am limited to looking at websites from here so that is all I have to go on. I would like to train it for hunting but am not sure how many opportunities we would have up here. That being said I would still like to purchase one with hunting background as I would like to purchase one for hunting when we move south and would like to use the same breeder. Thanks in advance for the input.

You're going to have the dog for the next 10-15 years.... I wouldn't limit yourself to the 401 corridor....

I would not limit yourself to this geographical area other, or you may be excluding quality dogs. Take the time to do your research. Check out the classified sections of www.canadianhuntingdogs.com and www.retrievertraining.net. If you have questions on specific litters, feel free to post it here or send me a PM and I'll try to find out what I can.

There are two training groups in the Kingston Area. The Eastern Ontario Retriever Club and the Kingston and Area Hunting Retriever Club. Both have websites.

Also most breeders are willing to ship a pup to you via air mail. Something to consider.

I met someone this month that hunted ptarmigan, with his Lab this year. He said it was a blast. Do you have them in Nunavut?

I hear you guys on the not limiting myself to that area. I did figure that that area of the 401 corridor covers pretty much all of southern Ontario and that there would be some good options in there.I appreciate the reposes and will be responding to some PMs in a couple minutes.

I have found that some of the breeders I have looked at are willing to do this and others are not. My thoughts were that it would be nice to have a pup at the start of the summer while I don't have to work to get started on the training and then I could continue on when we are back here in the fall.

We do have ptarmigan but I have only seen them twice in the two years I have been here. There are not a whole lot in the area i am in. I was hoping to do some goose hunting but they are hard to decoy and call here and they migrate pretty soon after the season opens. I am hoping to get a chance at the spring snows before we head back to Ontario for the summer. If only I could get a lab to retrieve caribou. There are lots of them to be hunted in the fall before they migrate out.

Lots of eider ducks?

There are eiders around but the locals have told me the spend most of their time out in the Ocean. I have seen a flew flocks fly by while I was fishing but geese are way more plentiful. I also haven't seen the king eiders but they should be around here at times. Mostly speckle bellies and some snows. I have never shot either so am hoping to add them to my list next fall. This year I seemed to spend all of my time caribou hunting. We are allowed five tags under a resident license so we tried to fill our freezer as meat is quite expensive up here, We share a lot with friends and colleagues as well.

I don't know what part of Nunavut you are in , but along the land across the channel from northern Quebec (Hudson Strait?) , eiders are being killed off by winter warm water releases from hydro- electric plants which screw up the freezing of the water etc. Complicated - but the ducks are being driven into small pools near the shore line and dying there by the hundreds as they need big water.

(Definitely off topic but I find it alarming.)
