Need some help.

Hello everyone,
I need some help from the experts. The last couple months my dog in in and out of ear infection. We have tried everything from the vet (surolan,otomax). After the treatment the infection come back in a week or two. ( I saw the other thread with the ear issue I just dont want to hijack.) I ordered some Zymox otic and I hope its going to work soon it's get here. My other problem is which might be related to the ear. I noticed my dog scratching himself everywhere and with the front of his teeth going thru the hair (like try catch flees). I just noticed this in a last few day. Should I try some different food? What food should I try? Now I feed him Acana.

Your dog more than likely has a food alergy you can have allergy testing done consult your vet

3 Black Dogs is right that it is an allergy. Allergies are almost impossible to pin down and even spending hundreds at the vet doesn't always do it. It could be one of a hundred things. Detergent you use to wash the blankets to ..............My two are allergic to some weed. They lose their belly hair from June to Oct. only. No problem in the winter.

Which Acana formula do you feed him? Is it Grasslands, Wild Prairie or Pacifica? Those three formulas are their grain-free formulas, and if you're feeding something other than one of these, if it were my dog, I would try one of these three first to see if that helps. Allergies are a long road of trial and error, so I wish you luck and patience for the next while.

I feed him Ranchland. It says grain free on the bag.

When my dog was a pup he got some sort of infection and it was in his ears and then developed into spots on his belly and throat. I can't remember the antibiotic I was given but it was half a pill once a week for 14 weeks and it worked great. I would guess that it is an infection throughout them but could possibly be an allergy as well.

Sounds like allergies. I would do an elimination diet to find out what your dog can eat. Start with a single protein source and keep her on it for at least a month. If you don't see some improvement switch to another protein and try again. Don't add anything else until all symptoms are gone, and then slowly add other things like rice, sweet potatoes etc.

It doesn't matter if the blend is grain-free. Your dog could be allergic to half a dozen other things in the dog food (believe me I KNOW!). A simple blood test from your veterinarian can cure a lot of headache, and avoid trial and error-despite it not being 100 percent perfect, you will at least know what foods to avoid feeding your dog and can narrow down brands/blends. Even still, in the summer or throughout the year your dog may need Benadryl, prednisone, atopica, and a med I cannot for the life of me remember now. Discuss with your vet.

It could be so many things other than food. The vet gave you meds for meds for infection /fungus/ bacteria but I'd ask the vet about mites before I changed the food.-I know...$$$$ but it could be mites - sarcoptes scabei, ( They love ears .) , Cheyletiella yasguri , and Otodectes cynosis (other ear mites). A cheap ? scraping might be the solution.

As MV said I still have to use Benadryl for those 6 months my dogs are allergic to that weed.
