Don Elliot Puppy Classic and London Field Trial Club April 19th

Here is some info on the London Field trial club spring field trial for pointing dogs. A great option for new/prospective field trialers is the Don Elliot puppy classic. It is a very simple, 20 minute stake for dogs born after January 1st 2013. The dogs aren't judged on bird work, just hunt and application. It's open to all pointing breeds. The classic is in honour of Don Elliot, a gentleman who was very active in field trials back in the 60’s,70’s and 80’s. Don was instrumental along with Jack Haggis in securing Hullett Wildlife Area as a venue to run field trials which we still use today. Back then Puppy stakes were more common in trials and Don had a soft spot for wild eyed bird crazy puppy.

Also, I know this is Easter weekend but the puppy classic will be run first on Saturday so you can run your dog and be back in time so as to not be chastised by your family.

Note: Only a solid barrel firearm or plugged barrel firearm, with blank shells or crimps, which prevents a projectile (of any kind) from leaving the barrel may be used at all member field trial clubs.

Should have also mentioned that the derby stake is for dogs born after January 1 2012, very liberal judging looking predominantly for natural ability. There are birds planted for the derbies, they don't have to be steady but some level of point is preferred. The shooting dog stake and all age stake is for dogs that are steady to wing and shot.

Most folks show up Friday night, we cause trouble in town Friday evening, typically stay at the Parker House motel in Clinton, and then run dogs the next day.

P.S. How long do you have to stick around to collect the prize if you win? ;-)

Normally any "winners" are announced at the end of the day. How long that is of course depends on the number of entries. I think it would be a better idea to announce puppy wins at least, at noon break.

Unless things have changed the "prize" for a regular stake, ( not Championship), is a certificate. Important to save these if you are planning to continue to participate. For example , if you wanted to enter a Derby Championship sometime , those derby certificate numbers would qualify you.

Are these trials walking trials?

I think these are probably Horseback trials.

Folks walk and ride for the puppy stake at the OBDCA trials. If someone rides they have to go at the walker's pace. The Judge may ride or walk depending on how many puppy braces there are. As Spence said this is a " simple , 20 minute stake". No pressure. :) Great people and lots of fun.

Derby and Shooting Dog are horseback unless the premium says " walking". You can walk in all horseback stakes but you better be in good shape. It's not a Sunday walk. :)

Thanks for clarifying Sharon. It is technically a open/horseback stake but I doubt they'll be much horseback participation. I'm likely going to run 3 pups in the stake and I'll be walking as will most others folks that have confirmed participation.

We'll take a break around noon and announce winners if the puppy classic is over. They'll be some nice ribbons for the classic and winners picture etc.
