OFAH Position on Tag Cuts

Has anyone heard from the OFAH, PC party or the NDP? I mention the opposition parties because at the end of the day, the ministry is run by the Ontario Gov and we will hopefully be going into an election. It obvious that the Liberals have poorly manage this ministry for over 10 years.

Cutting taggs is not the solution here. Government needs to fund this ministry to ensure full and proper survey's are done, monitored and acted on in consultation with all interested parites to address depleting stock if this is the case.

Well after a brutal winter like we just experienced where some pockets were decimated I can't see how they could "not" cut back tags. In fact I hope they cut back the doe tags where I hunt deer and moose tags where we hunt moose. If you don't react to these massive winter kills and allocate tags like a normal year then you could set the herd back for a decade. What if next winter is just as brutal? I'm no fan of the MNR but in this case let's just leave it up to the biologists.

Exactly! We don't have a lot of choice. They're the people who have the skill and whom we're paying to do the job. The survey was long overdue. I just wish it was more extensive,covering a much wider territory. Nickle and diming an issue this vital could come back to bite us,but,that's the Liberal way. Now,we're in one he** of a pickle,aren't we?

We have a lot of hunting freedom in Ontario, a bit too much for moose in my opinion. I know it has been talked about before but if we go to a draw system whereby you apply and pay if you receive a tag. You apply for a moose tag, antlered or antlerless, then if you are successful you pay for the game seal.

Why we don't have a draw system for a lot of our game is just dumb.

Bring back the moose

That survey is exactly that , nickel and dime trimmer and terrym . How could it be anything else . ? They're still lots of moose in some areas that had tag drops . Strange how we can help repopulate the state Michigan with moose yet ours crash . Way too many pencil pushers burning up funds making decisions that are based on nothing but a mere scan . Any trapper in the province worth his salt could manage the resource better in an area than biologists can . That's why the critters we harvest are sustained and continue to flourish . Some years they are down too and we limit but we know what is going on from year to year .

That's the problem,though,we DO have a draw system for Moose and it's completely effed up because it's just too damn complicated. I'll bet a weeks pay that if we cancelled the Wolf restrictions in north-central and northern Ontario (the reasons for it were an absolute failure,anyway),re-introduced the spring Bear hunt and went to a Moose system the same as we use for Deer,our troubles would over within three years.

I don't know about 3 years but I do believe your idea would help trimmer21 . Wolves nor bears were ever under duress even when things were wide open . If the the nipple suckers at Queens Park would look back they would see the common denominator . These are two things that have changed and not hunter numbers or what they harvested . There are less moose and deer hunters around than there was many years ago .

Our wildlife natural resources are managed by the political party in power at the given time, this is bull! wildlife resources should be managed by someone heading a group with the biological abilities to manage fish and game gained by experience and data from the lakes and forests of our province, this office should also be free from political interference or influence from the party in power at the moment, ie cancellation of spring bear hunt for a $100,000 contribution from a tree hugger. As long as the head of our natural resources is changed with every election or on the whims of the Premier of the day, we are in a mess! that's my little rant for the day, thankyou!

Actually a well thought out post more than a rant. The only thing is "somebody" is going to run this ministry and that person will be appointed by a sitting government and politics will be part of it again.

If you just changed the moose tag system to keep more of the young animals alive it would really help. Take the wolf and bear stuff out of it and there would still be a difference. If hunters shot only bulls our population would go up tremendously, they are just like whitetails, all you need are a few bulls for a lot of cows. We could also employ a minimum point system like they have out west, only older bulls are shot and the younger animals keep breeding.

They have grizzlies out west that are heavily protected and they still have healthy moose populations so it is not just the bears.
