I am not all that familiar with the WSM 270 round, I understand that there are better ballistics with it but are there any downsides other than the price/availability of ammo?

You'll need a longer barrel with the WSM. (24")
The WSM kicks harder, and makes a lot more noise.
Ammo is more expensive, and is much harder to find.
These are basically the cons. You do get greater velocity, and energy out of the 270WSM, as it's essentially the very fat .300WSM, necked down.
As a .270 WSM lover I will tell you that the ammo is very expensive and you probably won't be making a quick run to Canadian Tire to pick some rounds up. If you do get one, make sure to have plenty of ammunition whether it be reloading or store bought.

Just stick with the 270 win IMO! Cheaper ammo and easy to find. If you are a hand loader it makes no difference though
I once paid $20 for a box of 270WSM shells that was missing a round and felt like I won a lottery. That should give you an idea of pricing. Ammo is also not readily available everywhere. I owned one for about 5 years (2006-2011). They need a long barrel, so the short action is kinda pointless. Magazine size is limited because of the thickness of the round. They are LOUD. Recoil was not an issue for me, so I guess that was a plus.
I guess I'm just too traditional. Rifle rounds should have a certain shape and proportion. 30-06, 270, are perfect, 308, 243 are fine, rimmed ammo is for lever actions.
Sorta like the female shape .....the old curvy ones are best just more appealing to me!:o
