I have an old Remington Mohawk 600 243 with a scope base screwed into the top of the receiver and was wondering if it would be a good/cool idea to mount a reddot on it as a brush gun for deer hunting. What do you think? I was thinking of using a cheap ($50) one from Canadian Tire.
that is a sweet rifle you have I would be more inclined to put a fixed 4 power on her for hunting .something nice and compact with clear view and fast on target .would make a great deer and yote gun,i do not like to worry about batterys in the winter .what you take for her .Dutch
My young son has the same red dot on his .22 and it works well but I am not sure how long it would last on a centerfire rifle with considerably more recoil (not that a 243 is heavy on recoil). If you are set on a red dot step up in price a bit and look at a good bushnell or a bit more and check out the vortex offerings or go nuts and look at an aimpoint.
If I was going to go red dot, I'd go with a Bushnell TRS-25, they are a bit more money ($125-150 most retailers) but they have a good review and will handle the recoil well. Amazon.ca has them on for $118, but I think I saw Epps has them for just a bit more.
Don't cheap out on optics this is a common mistake, I am pretty confident in saying there are several deer every year that get missed or worse, wounded by people using cheap optics. Bush hunting I would go with a decent quality 2 - 7 power scope.
I agree. I use an old Bushnell Scope Chief 1.5-4.5 and it works perfectly. I never take it off x2 even for 100 yard shooting.Quote:

Wish I had a 600 in 243 for my bush gun.....not that I need another bush gun but those little Mohawks are just as handy as a 30-30 with more range when needed.
Stick a scope on it, you will wind up using the lowest setting.....
As mentioned earlier, if possible move up to a low power scope.
As Cintax said, a 1.5 x 4.5 would be an excellent choice. I used to have one and wish I still did. Great for the bush. And looked great on the gun. Ya, I care about that.
Presently, I have a 2 x 7 on my .243.
A red dot is a fraction of the scope $'s and a good choice.
Down the road you might decide to try a scope.
I have a Ruger M77 .243 ultralight and it will never be offered for sale. Got a B&L 1.5-5 X on it and have had several people try to buy it once they handled it. Do that Remmy a favor and put a low power good quality scope on it.
