Mainland or Island???
Starting to browse around for hunting properties for sale.
If YOU could choose between approx. 100acres of land on Manitoulin Island for hunting deer and bear OR approx. 100acres on the mainland say WMU 47,49 or 42 for example which would you choose and why?
As far as moose hunting goes I'd have to stay off the island, whereas I've heard good things about the bear and deer population on the Island.
thanks

Mainland.
Manitoulin is a great place, but there isn't a whole lot of Crown Land. Ideally 100 acres is a nice parcel size, but being close, or adjacent to Crown land tracts tends to increase game activity, variety, and population.

ive seen a bunch of different hunt camps for sale there, one here with 100acres with trails and stands and fully furnished camp for 99k....

Mainland, just the cost and bother of travel to the island would put me off.Dont really think there is any big advantage on being on the island, for re sale it attracts a smaller crowd.IMHO

Mainland or Island???
For me travel distance would be the biggest factor. I love the island and it has great deer oportunities but if I can cut an hour there and an hour back that's two hours of hunting and fishing. I currently travel 2.5 hours. That's 5 hours a trip. I would love to get an hour back if I had the money.

I love the island, I don't live there but have many friends there, where I hunt towards the north end, we harvest our deer, bear hunting is spotty but it's there, taking the boat or driving around takes about the same time for me and I'm down by Windsor, Ont. fishing is great for what ever you're after.....

I have never hunted it but rented a cottage there every summer for many years. I have never seen any area with more deer. If you didn't see 30 deer every day you weren't trying. But like every other place the deer don't live behind every bush. If the 100 acres you are looking at is good cover then you can expect fabulous hunting. If most is unsuitable cover then not so much. As already said there is no Crown land there so you hunt what you own and they are damned territorial on the island. The other thing is their season is later than the rest of Ontario's general rifle season so you can hunt the mainland first then go to the Island too.

You need permission every where, unless you own it, the deer population on the island is higher than the number of people who live there

If it's just you and a buddy stand hunting then 100 acres on the island would be alright for deer depending on the property.
However, if you've got more people you'll obviously need more land which you can travel to the Espanola area for. Deer hunting off the island isn't going to be great, but bear hunting will.

It would depend on how many times you'd go I think. The wife and I spent 3 yrs looking at places, and loved the island option. But, ya gotta' weigh the options out. Pros n cons of what's on your list of wants. Don't settle even if if its "close" to whatcha's want.
