What a bunch of frigging IDIOTS....didn't the highest court in the land just rule that it is to be DESTROYED??????
I'm sure that might work! Especially when Quebec's court challenges resulted in a huge waste of tax money !! I know what my answer would be !
The registry data is out of date. The work necessary to sort it out and bring it in line with all of the ongoing sales and exchanges really makes it an unwieldy beast.
This is a chance for Harper to win votes in Quebec. Given that there is no added value to the gun registry he should approve it. If Quebec wants to be their own distinct society and have their own gun registry then let it be. Provided there is no impact on other Canadians I am okay with him handing it over.
But pay attention to the details. It has to be affordable according to Couillard. I just see this a politics at the moment. If I were the PM I would hand over the data. The risk of a gun registry actually getting up and running in the next 10 yrs in Quebec is very low.
Not turning over the data will effectively be a poke in the eye to Quebec and they will not vote PC. This is an emotional issue for them and it has no connection with common sense or fact.
Nothing but political games. A liberal Harper hating Province looking to be paid off in exchange for a handful of Quebec seats. This is a horse race with Trudough and Harper nose to nose. Harper is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. Be interesting to watch how he plays his hand.
Personally I don't think any gun owner should be subject to a registry. However, this is politics and at the moment Quebec has Harper in the roll of the bad guy for denying them want they think they want. I would hand it over with a caveat the says they have to hold a vote with a clear majority prior to release of the data.
This allows Harper to turn it back on them and ask for other concessions. The Quebec Liberals have realized that they are up against the wall since the promised a registry, lost in the SCC and are now stuck with a bill they can't afford.
There already is a National registry of gun owners called the PAL system. There is also a registry of restricted weapons. This is and always has been smoke and mirrors to placate the antigun voters. Nothing more nothing less.
No,the SCC ruled that LGR data wasn't required to be retained so Quebec could use it for their own registry. It didn't rule that the info had to be deleted.....but it will be and quickly, too.
The info from the old registry isn't as dated as one would think. Except for a very few people that continually deal in firearms or new people just coming into the sport, most hunters tend to keep their firearms for life, especially those which may have been handed down from family members. That's why it's important for all the data to be deleted ASAP.
