Persistence Pays Off...1st Wild Turkey Down (May 2nd, 2015)
Well what a tough week of hunting we had last week. My brother and I basically juggled around final exams and starting our summer jobs to enjoy a few days out in the bush doing what we love. Opening morning and the next 3-4 days after there was minimal to no gobbling on the roost and the birds just weren't where we had scouted them a week earlier (we were thinking that little cold snap before the opener pushed them back a little bit). Heading onto a different property for the weekend we went out bright and early Saturday morning and similar to property #1, no gobbling and we just weren't on the birds like we had hoped. Feeling down in the dirt we drew up a game plan with our one buddy and decided to head out to the bush again in the afternoon to try our luck at an afternoon gobbler. Well we went out around 3pm and sat in the bush just to have the same scenario play out. 5pm rolled around and our buddy was just standing up from his tree when my brother yelped a few times and BAM a gobbler sounded off not 100 yards away. Oh boy our hearts were pumping and my brother does a few excited yelps and BAM this thing is closing the distance fast. I turn my head and see his gorgeous red head bopping through the harrdwood. He's about 25 yards from me when he sounded off again. That gobble rumbled through the bush and made my chest even rumble. As this turkey was looking for the hen he went behind a tree, I moved my gun to the closest gap between trees and right when we walked into the lane...BOOM off goes my 12 guage and down goes the bird. WOOOOO my first spring wild turkey!!! My brother already has 2, my buddy has 1 and now the monkey is off my back. The bird was a good sized Jake 5 inch beard, no spurs, 14 lbs not bad for my first ever spring turkey and certainly a hunt I will never forget. I couldn't be more excited and I will be getting my new tag this week and heading back out to the bush this weekend with my brother. What a hunt with my brother, good friend, and I'm so blessed to have shared it with them and to have harvested such an incredible animal.
Cheers
