Ottawa motorcyclist splits deer in half while driving down highway, leaves with only minor injuries
A motorcyclist struck a deer Thursday morning on Highway 417 in Ottawa, cutting the animal in half but leaving the driver with minor injuries.
According to police, the collision occurred around 5:43 a.m.
The deer didn’t suffer much. He was split in half so he died instantly, I’m assuming
“I saw a bunch of cars hitting the brakes in front of me and then kind of a cloud of what appeared to be red in front of me,” said Ian Courville, a paramedic who witnessed the accident, told the CBC.

Lane reductions were temporarily put in place on the highway near the Boundary Road exit. All lanes have since been re-opened.
The rider, 43, was taken to hospital for treatment. Police did not provide a description for damages to the motorcycle.

According to the Ministry of Transportation Ontario, crashes involving animals such as moose and deer are a growing problem.
Collisions have increased from 8,964 in 1999 to 12,791 collisions in 2008. This represents an increase of 43 per cent over a 10-year period.
Many of these collisions go unreported.
Police warned drivers who see an animal on or near the road to slow down and pass carefully as they may suddenly bolt into the path of oncoming traffic. Many areas of the province have animal crossing signs which warn drivers of the danger of large animals and asked drivers to be extra cautious in areas where these signs are on display, especially during dusk-to-dawn hours when wild animals are most active.
