I wonder if we don't apply this year, will be out of the draw for a long time??
Sad to say - but I feel that most of those that drop out will NEVER be back.
Skeeter, I sent you a pm.
Yep, 6000 less applicants last year. I venture a guess, it's gonna be closer to 10,000 more this year. Hey Skeeter, you guys still heading to the same area?
BUT only counting applicants could be misleading. Guys that buy tags and don't go at all are not factored in. Also there's thousands of tags that were bought for wives and neighbors so a group could manipulate the draw and transfer. at least they had a better chance each year. Not only will the hunter drop out but he'll not get a tag for his wife! I think that after this year most guys will finally admit defeat and next year we will see a collapse of the at least 40% of hunters. That's my prediction and time will tell. When all these guys find something else or somewhere else to fill their time they will not be back. I know guys that went to the southern states for less then a moose hunt and hunted hogs. Got lots of meat - had a great time - and were treated better then our own gov't treats us!
yup we're going back (we hope)
having a meeting tonight (with bbq moose ribs from last fall mmm ) we're deciding on group sizes, who's in what group. etc etc.
but if our plan fails and we don't get tags then we ain't goin! even if we get 1 tag I ain't goin. How do 10 guys bow hunt on one tag. No calf tags for the entire bow season. (anywhere) Fricken pitiful decision by the MNR. Bow hunter calf harvest for the entire province can probably be counted on one hand.
A gun guy hunting in the first 2 weeks of the gun hunt. (that's 90% of the guys) at least can explore or hunt on their own.
For the bow hunt everyone will need to be attached by an umbilical cord to the tag holder. Scouting/trail riding/looking for moose is still considered hunting as per the rules.
our moose hunt costs us about $1000/man . If we don't draw then we're not goin and our camp owner can keep the deposit and we will wish him well in the future. and the towns IGA/liquor store/bait shop/donut shop will also not be seeing us.
All levels of gov't tout about their visions of job creation/prosperity etc. REALLY? WTF! They complain about the loss in northern incomes etc . so this decision by the MNR is helping that out! REALLY?
Our camp guide decided to go to Montana on a Elk hunt. Only $3900.00 for 6 days. Bullseye outfitters.
He went up North last Fall to fill his Bull tag. Planned on hunting moose up N. for a week, stayed for 2 days. Went home with no moose.
If you count every dime you spend moose hunting, you will see that an Elk hunt is affordable. Gives you a break from moose and it's fun trying something new at least once!!
we've gone moose hunting for 27 years and have never missed. I've been lucky and harvested 10 myself - all bulls - lucky me!
But if we don't get 3 tags minimum then I'm done! Probably time to look for something else to do. might spend 3 weeks huntin for mr big bear. or go to the states.
How can a country with 300 million people have the game populations they have and
we have 30 million with a larger land mass and our game populations are struggling?
we managed it to this point! a big thank you to the Misfits of Natural Resources!
Let me clarify - I have nothing but respect for the front line MNR workers!
It's the decision makers sitting behind their desks just waiting to collect their fat gov't pensions some day
and are not held accountable for anything they do!
How the heck do we reward failure?
That's because the Liberals believe the predators have as much right to the ungulates as we do. Liberals are members of peta.
We are the only province without a spring bear hunt, other than Nova Scotia. They open a bear cull only where liberal are strong eg: Thunder Bay, S. S Marie etc. They give a few residents a bear cull but the rest of us have to go without a spring hunt. It's not right!!!
My group has been moose hunting together for @ 30 years now. I also now refuse to go without a bull and a cow tag. We switched over to muzzle loader zones 6 years ago and now even that is tricky to draw. We are booked for Quebec this year. License is expensive but we would burn that money up in gas anyway going out to NW Ontario and we save 2 days travel time. My fear is that there will be a mass exodus of resident moose hunters and they will switch over to deer. We are crowded as it is in our area hopefully it doesn't double with the onslaught of disgruntled moose hunters.
