Good GPS unit
What is a good easy to use, but full featured GPS unit that you fellers could recommend? I'm looking to purchase something that comes with good recommendation from Ontario outdoorsmen (based on usability, battery life, shock/waterproof ability and consistency in cold temperatures).
My budget is $400-700 taxes in. If you could also recommend a good mechanical compass as well....
Thanks.

I'm a garmin guy. Over the years I've owned several different models, currently the 60csx. If I needed to replace it tomorrow it would be with the 64s. I find it very easy to use and more options then you would ever need. Radio world for $389.00 plus taxes or loaded with the map of canada for $459.00.

garmin hands down...I currently have the Montana 650

Does the Montana 650 come loaded with Canadian maps?

Happy with my Magellan 610 but changed hunting area and no longer need it so listed it a couple days ago on ebay. Touch screen, topomaps loaded, waterproof etc etc. http://www.ebay.ca/itm/141718952168?...84.m1555.l2649

If you have a smart phone look into then avionics app. I spend quite a bit of time in unfamiliar northern lakes and I wouldn't leave the dock without it.

I have the Garmin 62s, I got it on sale for $175 and then added a topo map for around $120 which shows the WMU units. The battery lasts all day as long but I turn it off when not in use which is about 1/2 the time.

I have always sported garmin products whether it be automotive or backwoods gps. I had an etrex which was simple but effective. I've moved up to the 62sc. the new versions are the 64. loaded with features but easy to get through the main functions. quick satellite acquisition. good battery life. get one loaded with the Canada topo or get a topo map separately. check out the reviews on youtube.
you wont be disappointed!

Garmin 62s. With Canada topo maps. They are very rugged and waterproof. I also carry a topo map and a Silva Ranger compass for insurance. In case the satellites go down, or the unit can't acquire a signal.
