Standard Poodle Puppy

Hey All,

My wife and I are fostering a pure bred standard poodle puppy and I am looking at getting her trained for hunting. She is 10 weeks old right now.

It's never to young to start training for anything. She comes from the best breeding stock and will be bred herself in a few years. She already is 100% trained to sit and is very good with come and I am working on stay right now with her.

We are heading up to the cottage this weekend and I will be doing some small game hunting soon and was wondering how to start the hunting training process with her. I know that she needs to get used to a gun with it being as it is and not firing it. My wife and I make sudden loud noises at home and she doesn't seem phased by it.

What should my timeline be for training? At what age should I start training what?

I would appreciate any advice you can give. It would be even better if you have any Poodle specific advice as well!

Great dogs, very smart. My last one was a standard poodle (just a family dog), which helped me decide to get a pudelpointer.

I'm a novice myself, so sorry I can't give much advice. There is a breeder in the U.S breeding and training poodles back to their old duck hunting roots.

Its insane how smart they are right? My dog is already better trained than most of my friends adult dogs lol. Thanks for sharing that with me though! I hope this dog works out well for you too :)

They will train 'you' quickly enough....if your not on your guard!

Are you training the dog as a retriever?

Recommend you get a good retriever training programme, like "Smart Work for Retrievers Volume 1"
by Evan Graham. ( $25.00 American ??)

Imo , 10 weeks is too young to think about gun conditioning.

Totally agree! Now is the time to bond with your pup! Work on "puppy OB ... Sit, here, getting used to a leash, dragging a leash, walking on leash. Bill Hillman has some great videos on early puppy training. Now is the time to enjoy your pup while they are they are a pup! :-)

My UK lab (7 months)is the same way, very intelligent and easy to train. I use a combination of training methods suited to my dogs temperament. The Wildrose Way training DVD series and Dennis Voight training methods. Just started gun conditioning with a starter pistol and have obedience training down first. So far no e collar has been needed and you may want to contact a Standard Poodle Field Trialer to find out if an e collar is a training method typically used for the poodle temperament.

I have alway been a big fan of Standard Poodles. Being Poodles many people have the wrong impression of the dogs character. Apart from being extremely smart, they are quite tough with good energy. I have been told sandard poodles stil have hunting instint. Good luck with her. Id be interested in hearing your progress. No pictures?

Good Morning All,


So we took my pup up to the cottage and learned a couple exciting things!


1. We can take her off leash without her going too far away from us. Obviously she is a puppy so she still stays near but this is a good first step with her not running off.


2. She is not gun shy. At all! We learned this by accident. She was on the deck of the cottage about 100 yards off where I was shooting my .22 on the dock. She was pulling on the leash in my wife's hand in my direction and she led her down to see me. I fired off some more shots and my pooch just looked at me and then started to sniff around. I was so proud!


3. She went up to her belly in the frigid Sudbury water on her own! We had a English lab with us who loves the water and she tried to follow him out there. Still a good start!


So needless to say I was very proud of my pup this weekend :) If we continue to bond and work on training, I may have a very good hunting dog on my hands!
