As a hunter and firearms owner, stories like this make me fear that, due to some shrill member of the public, sooner or later I'm going to find myself face down on the ground with the cops stepping on my neck for reasons totally beyond my comprehension.
I have been chastised here for this but I am extremely cautious about loading and unloading firearms from my vehicle. Often I just wait for darkness only to avoid stuff like this. I have also taught my kids to not discuss the fact we have guns in the home with anybody.
When I was in grade 6, one of my friends brought his pellet gun to school as a prop in a play.

Forty years ago, our middle school had a rifle club. Indoor range, school provided .22 single shots, you had to bring your own ammo.Quote:

When I was in CEGEP in Quebec one of the teachers used to hunt snow goose with us. We actually were allowed to bring cased guns into school but had to keep them in the Principals office. It helped that he went to school with my father but this is a true story. Yes, times have changed. This was 40 yrs ago.

I have seen videos of people stopped and questioned for open carry in the states. 90% of the time when the cops just see the person as the are driving/walking by there is a little chat, smiles and everyone carries on. When it's a call from the public the swat team, national guard, army, navy, air force, and the Marines come storming up, and half the time the person has nothing or is legal to carry. The case that makes that point the best was an officer walked in to a fast food place and saw a guy with a holster on his hip. The officer wait till the guy walked away from the counter, waves him a side asks for ID and says he wants to run the serial on the gun. The civilian says ok, asks if the officer would like to remove the gun himself or if it was OK to hand it to him. Cops says just hand put it on the table and step back a couple steps. So the guy lays the gun on the table, and steps back. Cop runs the guys I'd and the serial on the gun, an.d it's all good tells the guy he is good to go and thanks him. Guy puts the gun away, thanks the officer for doing his job. The two start chatting and as they are looking out the window a hand full of cars and the swat team show up. Some person called 911 and said there were two guys with guns in the place having a fight and one just tried to shot the other....
No call to police or 911 should be anonymous, any false statements should be chargeable.
Yes - you are going to find that the antigun crowd will do anything they can to harass those of us who have guns - one other point - actually when the officer asked the guy with the gun for ID the gun owner did not have to provide any ID - it is only required if you are committing a crime - the guy opening carrying a gun was not committing a crime so no ID required -
A lot of times a cop will ask someone for ID and make it sound that giving it to him is required by law - this is completely wrong - this isn't Nazi Germany where you had to show your "papers" - more and more people are beginning to exert their rights when dealing with cops - if your are interested go on You Tube and see what is happening - a lot of people are getting fed up with the cops and the way they treat people
I have seen those videos and while humorous I have to scratch my head. Why make a tense situation worse? I have no problem showing my ID to a cop, especially if I was carrying a firearm. Sometimes gun owners are their own enemies. Not excusing the idiots who call in false reports but why purposely raise the anxiety level with what could turn out to be a trigger happy rookie?

I appreciate what you are saying but - the cops can do their job without mistreating people by taking their rights away - too many times the cops overstep their bounds - and for years they were getting away with it but now people are recording what they are doing and it is changing things - now the cops hate when someone is recording what is happening and are trying their best to stop it - even when it is legal to do it
Remember one thing - many guys fought and died so that you have freedom and certain rights - if you don't exercise these rights you will eventually lose them - when I'm driving a car and a cop pulls me over I have to by law show him my insurance, driving license and registration - that's it - if you asks me anything else I don't have to answer -
