Shooting for fun?

I am getting flamed for shooting for fun to see what my guns can do, have we lost the enjoyment of seeing what our guns can do? I remember as a kid we would shoot hundreds and hundreds of rounds just to shoot and we would learn what we could do. I would shoot tin cans at 100 yards with an old 22LR Cooey 82 trainer and iron sights. We would shoot saplings down at close range just to see them fall. We would shoot center fire rifles for hours and until our shoulders were blue and figure out what we actually had.

I just picked up an SKS, so much fun, not accurate as of yet but a riot. Bringing out the 410 has made me enjoy testing things again and reloading once again has brought back my joy of learning about shooting, the history behind it and brought back the respect of a "baby" gun.

I am waiting on a shipment from Cabelas of a new scope for my 22LR, going to setup some targets at 100,200 and 300 yards to see what I can do prone off a bipod, why? Just because I can.

Does anyone else play with their guns at the range or do we all just punch enough paper to know we will hit a deer at 100 yards and be done with it.

Your SKS is a lot of fun, but you'll likely get it down to "minute of barn door", instead of MOA....however, just about as much fun as you can have with your pants on anyhow.

I shot a 410 slug, don't do that and mention it here, they actually hit pretty hard at close range.

The SKS at 25 yards free standing and shooting without even a bull, just at a 2'x2' board was pretty cool, the sights are quick to acquire and the gun does not jump, I can see why this and the SKS work so well for combat, always stays on target.

I was looking up the 22LR at longer ranges, I may have to put a stick with markings for height up it at 300 yards, looks like that is going to be some substantial drop.

The SKS is a lot of fun. I was surprised how accurate mine is ... not MOA by any means but for a 60 year old service rifle that's been ridden hard and put away wet by Russian recruits it does pretty well. But it gets much sloppier when the barrel heats up.

Like you, I shoot as much as I can. I like to shoot a newly obtained center fire rifle around 150 rounds just getting used to it, slicking up the bore, cycling the action, checking the action screws, and just enjoying it even before zeroing the optics.

Sometimes I make a full day just shooting different rifles and loads at different type targets.

I saw that thread. I see nothing wrong with a .410 slug out of a 3" shell.

Ballistically it would do the job as well as a lot of other ammo. If it was about plinking using a slug? Who cares, you have the room to shoot, and know how to shoot safe....

When it's time to put meat on the table, you'll miss a heck of a lot less than some of the folks with other opinions.

My main hobbies consist of shooting (trap/sporting clays/target rifle). Attend any well run shooting range and you will see shooting for fun is alive and well.

if you dont shoot for fun then why do it at all. Also saw the ridcule on the other posts its kinda funny after hunting season ends or slows down the old grumps and armchair critics come out of the woodwork more. It had me ditch this forum last year for a whole year but realized some people will never change and they make life interesting for themselves by causing forum mayhem, best to ignore them. Their posts arent worth the thumbs they used to type them.

Ive never shot a 410 but I see myself picking one up in the future. If im ever out hunting birds for sure ill be bringing some slugs incase a deer comes by.

Im on the train right now going to toronto airport for a 1 week much needed vacation. When I get back I plan on having a bunch of friends over for daytime bonfire skeet shooting and some rifle practice. A friend has some old mausers and other old military guns hes gonna bring. That indeed is what I call fun and so does the crowd I hang out with. Just because a gun doesnt turn your shoulder blue when i goes bang isnt a reason to criticize choice of calibre or other. As old as some of these yahoos are they sure act like children, albiet they have probably been socked a couple times in their life for being a donkey anyways so they probably already know that about themselves.

Hey a 410 is loads of fun. Just last Sunday I had the 410 out then changed to 10/22 for a while then got the 12 gauge out
