16 ft boat and hp options

I am looking for some opinions. I am scaling back somewhat to a smaller boat. I currently run a Lowe roughneck mod v 17 and a half footer. Great boat but not kid friendly.

I just put a deposit on a 16 ft Lund fury tiller model and I'm torn over what engine to get. The package comes with a 25 hp mercury 4 stroke ( don't want advice on motor brand - I love my Mercs). I'm putting 55lb ipilot and a decent fish finder on it. So I figure with gear, extra battery and two persons a 25 hp probably would be fine. But I figure once a 3rd person in in the boat ill be pushing water pretty good. I also considered a 30 hp but from what I am reading the torque isn't any better then a 25 just more speed. So my next option is the 40 hp. The boat is rated for max of 40. But a 40 just seems like a lot of hp on a not very heavy aluminum boat. It would definitely have no issues getting up with more then two people on board.

opinion? what are other people running with a similar setup?

I have a 16ft fury tiller with a 40hp merc. I wouldn't want a smaller motor. With a trolling motor and batteries in the bow and 3 people in boat max speed for me is around 30mph. By myself it will go 32mph. Has been a great boat. You will use more fuel with the 25hp as you will be running wide open to stay on plane. With the 40 I can cruise at 22-24mph with motor not working.

Allways go with the max HP

Go closer to what the boat is rated for, not the least that will get you up on plane.
I had the same attitude about OMC that you have for Merc products and I bought Evinrude for years. I finally broke down and tried Yamaha. Now I wonder what the heck took me so long to wise up.

Its funny, every piece of equipment I have from generators, to snowmobiles, to ATV's is Yamaha. Refuse to spend my money on anything else, but I have never considered a Yamaha outboard.

Yup, go with the 40, and I would only use a merc as an anchor. Get a yammy on that baby!!

Waste of time as an anchor. If I ever have to get in a boat powered by a merc, it will be in a casket.

I have an older rebel 16, Its specs are pretty similar to a new Fury. I run a 50 on it with side console and it gets up and moves even with 3 in the boat. You will definitely not be over-gunned with the 40. Especially if you want to pull a tube in the future etc. My kids can even ski behind my boat!

I'd max it out as well. Fury is a cool little boat.
