Beagles galore
Short piece on rabbit hunting with beagles in the South:
When she hits the scent, she opens up and they all know it, all the others in the pack, and in an instant they’re at it again, bedlam in the river bottom, an arioso chorus of bawling barks and yowls. Suddenly it’s like it once was in the North Carolina Piedmont, with frost in the fields and a rabbit on the run.
Check out the photo gallery for some nice beagle pix.

Nice article and good history of the land but them I lament the people who occupied the land before the colonists arrived. Pretty big investment for a few bunny hunts. I cant see a lot of benefit from running such large packs of dogs but some folks just enjoy the singing of the hounds and just being out there.

Beagles get me every time. Never rabbit hunted behind one but on those crisp November mornings when they get tonguing.... there's no sweeter sound.

The most we ever ran were 3-4 beagles, because that's what we had among our group. What a tremendous experience it would be to hunt with large pack like that!

That was so great. I love beagles! At the trial every handler knows his dog's particular bawl. Judges look for the dog who picked up the scent first , the one who realized a backtrack had taken place, a stream had been jumped etc. Rabbits are groomed in the training grounds- feeding stations , predators trapped in off season etc..

Would be nice to see top-notch videography added to an article like that.

Thanks Welsh. Beagles are awesome little dogs.

I used to own a beagle as did many of my friends. Great fun hunting over them.

Despite what many think, there doesn't need to be a lot of walking involved. My Dad and I would sit on top of a hill waiting for the beagle to bring the rabbit around and bang! With GPS units now available even losing the dog is not as big a worry.

Some interesting things I've seen rabbits do when the beagles were behind them:
- crawl on their bellies
- run in little zig-zags
- run in little cork-screws
- swim (yes swim) across creeks
- run inside the base of a hollow standing tree and poke his head out of a hole 10 feet over our heads
