Buying a new moose gun

I'm planning on buying a new moose rifle

Here's what I want:
a hunting rifle
stainless barrel
light weight
not a pretty gun

Here's what I'm using it for:
shots out to 150 yards
each day is about a 7mile hike up a mountain and back
rain, snow, sleet, cold doesn't matter we hunt sun up to sun down

I've been looking at a 300win mag or a 300WSM with a 1X6 scope on it as the hunt is a mix of bush, logging roads, cuts and swamps. I'm young enough and in decent enough shape to shoulder anything but don't really want something that is ridiculous in cost of ammo
I looked at a Tika T3, TC encore and a few others
just looking for a few suggestions
budget is around $1500

if you don't want to spend an arm and a leg on ammo then 30-06 it is... (could even do 308 if you want) is it cool and flashy ? nope, but it will do everything you're asking of it. i have the Tikka T3 in 30-06 for my all around gun. deer, bear, moose, whatever NA has to offer, it will deal with it. is your budget 1500 incl scope or 1500 just the rifle? tikka t3x lite stainless will run you 1250 which doesn't leave much room for a (good) optic (don't ever skimp on optics) .

Caliber for moose is endless. To me it is all personal preference. It comes down to what you want to spend on ammo. As far as a gun, I have a Tikka T3 lite in stainless and absolutely love it! Comparing it to my Sako there is some differences in balance, trigger pull, etc. But all very little. If I have to do any hiking my Tikka comes with me as the Sako is a pig. I have a buddy who has a Tikka in the laminate and it is very clean looking gun. It's chambered in a 30-06 and I used it to kill a deer at 317yards. Dropped it dead! Those are the only bolt actions I've shot. I have a Winchester model 88 in .308 which is a sweet gun! Killed moose, elk and deer with it. Great bush gun in lever action. I'm looking at the Browning BLR as my next rifle. All just my opinions so take them as they are. Good luck in your search and happy buying. Nothing more exciting than buying a new gun!

I priced out a Stainless T3 yesterday and was told $1099 adding a Hawke 1X6 scope for $399 so about $1500 before taxes

Good advice already given but if you want a truly light weight rifle take a look at the new hunter model from Kimber as it will come in at 5.65 pounds without scope.

Having said that , shooting any of the 300 mags out of such a light weight rifle may not be that much fun so I would look at a 308 as it will do anything the magnums can do unless shooting past 250 -300 yards then the magnum would have the advantage. Epps has one in 308 for $1228.69 and the Kimber's also come with a sub MOA guarantee and are really nice rifles with controlled round feed on a scaled down Mauser action and a 3 position safety that I really like.

Although many rifles will fit the bill of what you are looking for you will be hard pressed to beat the Kimber in the weight department . This is my Kimber classic select 257 Roberts fully loaded and it is a dream to carry and shoot.

I'm not really concerned with the recoil. I will be sighting it in with a lead sled and shooting it hunting will be full of adrenalin and I'm positive I won't notice it one bit

Your max range being 150 yards should take out all of the 300 magnums, it is total overkill at that range.

30-30, 308, 30-06, 6.5x55, 45-70, 270, 280, 7x57, 8mm Mauser, they will all kill moose inside that 150 yard area and not cause you to have to have a heavy gun for recoil or need to spend $8/shot. Get a good bullet (FTX ideally in the 30-30) and go out hunting. If you want to hunt moose out at 500 yards then start looking at magnums.


Oh, I mean, 375 H&H, bare minimum for Bullwinkle :D

The Savage Axis line in 30-06, 7MM, 300 or 308 will do the job. I have seen on MEWE all three of those guns with scopes for less than 500. Lots of 300 and 7MM. Seems no one wants to pay to feed them. These post are usually in around southern Ontario.

As for 308 and the 150 yards, the savage Axis is the best out of the box gun I have owned. See my other post where I just picked up a brand new Savage Axis 2, Snow Camo in 308 last for $509 in Ottawa. The gun will never fail to perform, is deadly accurate and the 308 is cheap to feed, plus has more ranges of bullet heads (110-180 Grains offerings). I even custom load 130 gr for coyote in 308.

You wont break the bank and have money left over for a good pair of boots to do all that walking/stalking.
