Guys,
I'm in the market for a 16' aluminum for use as a family fishing boat. Many of those I see on Kijiji are equipped with 20 or 25 hp motors. Isn't this a bit light ? We have a 14' with a 25 hp two stroke at my parents lake and I find it adequate but certainly not over-powered.
I figured a 40 horse would be more fitting for a 16' with two adults and two kids and then would also be powerful enough for pulling a tube around the lake.
just thought I'd see if others agreed.
Check the transom plate for the Max HP rating on whichever boat you look at. A 30HP anything on a 16' tinny should really zip.
It all depends on the width of boat and height of sides. My 16' aluminum has a full steering console, front and back casting platforms with a 60 HP. My grown up kids use it for tubing and water skiing.
I agree with Rick I have a 169 Starcraft with a 65 Merc (650 Thunder bolt ) and even then I think it's still rated for something higher .

I have a 16 foot Lund fury tiller with a 40 Honda on the back. Max power was what I went with. I can cruise @ 25 26 mph with lots of throttle left. One night come back a bit late ran @ 30 all the way back to camp. You really appreciate the extra power when it's needed.

Go with max rated power, or close. Have a 40hp on 15' Legend and would not want any less.

Depends on the weight of the boat too. Some 16 tinnies are a lot heavier than others, it depends how they're made. Go with max power per the capacity plate, or close to it, for the best performance.Quote:

Your capacity plate will give you your answer. Go with 80% to maximum HP.

go max power rating you wont be disappointed like stated above its nice to have when needed and also running bigger motor at half throttle uses less gas then a smaller motor going full out so price difference is negligable when you think about gas savings...unless you dont use the motor much...
