On average

So I always think about this and it’s an on going thought. I finally had to ask it to kind of keep me on track and focused. I’m watching wild tv and of course, every sit and each time out they see deer. Now I know these are outfitters, in the US I’m high population places. Fine granted.

what my real question is to all of you, how often do you see a deer? How many a year roughly do you see while hunting? I don’t hunt fields, I’m in the Bush. Funnels, trails, fresh tracks etc. Usually I c maybe one or two a year if I’m lucky. Is this something normal for all of you?

I am in a good spot. High population and lots of food. My property is a shelter for them.
I see on average deer at least 50 percent of the sits wind dependent. Sat 4 times and have seen 8 deer. Saw 4 deer 2 different sittings.

My seasons are similar to yours marky. It was much better around here 10 or 15 years ago but in recent years I'm doing well to have 3 or 4 sightings in a season, archery included.

In our week of camp during gun season (6 guys) we might hunt hard all week and end up with one deer and maybe 4 or 5 deer seen. There has also been occasions where we have lucked out and shot 4 or 5 but the luck was more in having a decent shot at them. We tagged out one year with 5 deer but saw less than 10 all week.

Most of the stuff on Wild TV is pretty far from reality for most of us.

I take the WildTV stuff with a huge grain of salt. They use outfitters and need to edit about 2 months worth of tape to get a half hour show. That gives the impression that there's Deer running all over the place when,in fact,the exact opposite is true. The other thing that gets me is that the average Joe could only dream of getting away on an Alaskan,Yukon or African hunt even just once in a lifetime. For North American outfitted hunts,the average cost is $10K all in. For Africa,closer to $60-100K although I'm sure KMG could give a more definitive costing for Africa. Relax,Mark,you're likely doing just fine. :moose:

Definitely depends on area. I made it out 13 times last year and saw 27 deer (some most definitely could have been repeats)

Each time I go out, I feel like I have a relatively good chance of seeing a deer and would guess I see them roughly 50% of the time.

Dry spells happen though, so don’t sweat it. Keep getting out there and enjoy yourself. The anticipation is part of the fun!

You know what, that’s identical to my years normally. I take it all our seasons are all pretty similar. Some years it’s a bit better and other years a bit slower. Still a calming feeling hearing that everyone’s hunting season is more or less the same.

I've been out about 8 times and haven't seen a thing. But my trail cams have pictures of deer at various times when I'm not there. I don't tend to see a lot of deer.

very dependant on area. this month i ran into one deer and i saw 6 this month on my drive to and from work (about 10 km from my home).
when i lived in sudbury, i saw one deer. one freaking deer. at a golf course. and i hunted hard.
a few years back i would end up seeing about 10% of the times i went out. often while turkey or duck hunting of course.
so it really depends. its all about luck, right time and right place. if you are frustrated with the lack of action i highly recommend small game or waterfowl. more action for sure. plus the boom always puts a smile on my face :)

Seen quite a few deer on my first few outings while I was still hunting............................... but now...... I setup in a river bottom hoping to catch a big buck out for a stroll and have not seen anything in the deep stuff yet.... I will give it another go in the deep stuff, a little closer to Halloween.... But I always go knowing I am going to spot a deer, sometimes I doubt myself but if I keep the faith it will come, if not today then tomorrow :)

The MNR has said there is approximately 1 deer for every 2 sq miles. If you are seeing deer on a regular basis then you are in an area that has a good population of deer. Food, cover, good bedding areas could be the reason. So, if you are only seeing deer a couple times a season, I would say on average that is the norm for the area you are hunting based on what the MNR are saying...
