Cold t get out for the morning hunt but made it out for the late evening for the first time. As I’m reading an article on late afternoon turkey hunting I hear hens start calling, then start seeing in a field west of me 1,2,3 back bla blah 7. I hear them calling and feeding so I just let some gentle clucks out and they call back. Hoping they go and roost in the same area they always do I just stay out and wait. All of a sudden they start running off. I think coyote but then a menenite comes through the field and they all fly away. Some go left some go right some go back and one with a red head end up flying behind me. All
goes quite and im
thinking damn it’s done for the night. I make one more call and I get a response that sounds like a hen. I wait and it comes closer and closer. I hear the ground start crunching and as I look behind me I see this fire engine red head 20 yards behind me coming my way. I awkwardly try to get ready for a shot at the young jake but he comes up into the open and instead of going left to me he high tales it to the right and over the hill...first time hunting that late in the evening but I will definitely do it again. Haven’t had that much action and fun in the turkey woods in a while! No bird to tell you about but hands down reassured my love for the sport.
