What is your budget? I would spend as much as you can. Cheap glass is just that. Anything made is Japan is typically pretty good.

I have a Bushnell Elite 3200 2X7 on my TC. Love it. Works for me.
My Leupold 2x7 has never failed me om my Savage 50 cal. SML 7 shots at 7 deer = 7 dead deer. all one shot kills.
Yes but cheap now days isn't synomomous with quality. Older stuff is cheap because it's old and "out dated" to some. The bushnell 3200,4200 and 6500 we're good scopes for the money and made in Japan. The 3500 and 4500 aren't as stout.
I would look on CGN for a vx2 or 3 or 4500 etc. You can save some bucks and get something decent. I picked up a minty vx3 2.5-8 last year for my ML for $500 to my door. During the possible crappy weather of ML season and ML's potential finicky nature like to to have my variables covered. Good glass gives you an advantage of seeing that deer in low light conditions.
In good inexpensive line for scopes are the NcStar products.
I bought their x4 - 30 shotgun scope (long eye relief) for my in-line. It's a stubby (short) scope that fits great on a rail and provides more than enough scope for ML hunting.
What dont you like about the Bushnell Trophy DOA? The reticule? Not bright/clear enough?
I would likely buy a 3-9x50mm or 4-12x50mm Vortex, Leupold or Nikon. Most have 4" eye relief anyways so I dont think a shotgun/muzzle loader specific scope is necessary.
