Nice to be wanted :)

Got a call from a landowner that got my number from one of the farmers I do some coyote hunting on. She explained her situation...
A coyote that keeps hanging around her estate home coming up close to the house. Having small children and dogs she was understandably worried.

With the neighbourhood having a few larger homes (estate style) in the area, I decided to bring along my shotgun instead of a rifle....
Last week after work I went there twice and both times spotted the coyote in the bush but sneaking up on him was too tough. With it being so dry at the time, every step I made, the leaves and twigs would just snap under my boots making it impossible for me to get close enough for a shot....I told the owner to keep an eye out and when conditions improved (got some rain) I would be back...

Fast forward to this morning........She texted me letting me know that she seen the coyote again... With a good wind and the moist ground I made my way to the back of her property shortly after 4pm..... My plan was to walk (still hunt) the area into the wind in hopes of spotting him before he spotting me.... I did bring my calls along and was planning on using them later on in the hunt but that wasn't necessary.

I took my time still hunting the area with shotgun in hand. I know my pace was good because the squirrels were out and about all around me.....Slow and steady I traveled a few hundred yards before I spotted this ugly looking thing coming through the forest floor toward me... As it neared the 30 yd mark it started to change directions at which point I let out a soft wolf sound stopping him in his tracks...
Needless to say she is very happy....

Good job Frank. This is the best way to make good friendships with land owners. They will tell other people about what happened and then they will want you to go to their place and so on. Most of my deer/turkey/goose hunting spots are because I shoot coyotes on their land during the winter or whenever they have a problem.

question for ya, when you still hunt like that, what is your pace like? 1 step every few seconds or longer... basically how slow/fast are you moving.

When I get into the groove, I move really slow... 1, 2 well placed steps, then stop, look and wait 5, 6, 7, 8 seconds and move again.... Most of the time, I am probably moving too fast. It is hard (a chore at times) to move slow enough......When I catch myself moving too fast, I try to remind myself................"What's my hurry, I am in their bedroom, so relax they are here, no need to rush it " unfortunately lots of times I don't follow my own advice, I move too fast and get busted..... But a good steady wind is great, it helps mask any sound I make and with the leaves blowing I believe it helps mask my movements from those, always on the lookout animal eyes... :)
