Preparedness and you - How prepared are you for a 30 day shutdown

Couple of recent posts have raised a question a couple of years ago, I asked about preppers and prepping in General. Are you prepared, do you have food storage, a water plan, power, medical, farm skills, alternate cooking and heating methods.

What would you do - if say, a world wide power outage hit from a Natural EMP or Nuke EMP, with no possible recovery for 12 to 18 months. What scenarios do you think will play out, WRT food shortages, lawlessness, ect, ect. Do you have enough toilet paper - seems to be the indicator of panic!

Maybe I am a fool, but I just don't see anything like this happening at all... I can see loosing power for a week or even two might happen but beyond that (with a global economy at my fingertips) it won't make me helpless..... I guess I am just too busy doing stuff to worry much about it, maybe I should, but I don't, there are other everyday life things getting in the way right now..
With this being said......I thank guys like line052 (Mark) for reminding me about what can happen if we stop thinking for our self...

LCBO order of cider, sake and wine (all from Ontario) picked up.
Metro order for food placed.
Black Rifle Little Warrior coffee resupplied...
Internet speed increased

enough wet heavy snow I don't want to go outside ...

CHECK, CHECK, CHECK, CHECK etc. .... ALL READY! ready for the next 28 day disaster for Ontario.


Now a real survival issue like a very large solar flare (seems to be 1 or 2 every 100 years, last real big one went in the other direction thankfully)... 2 30lb propane tanks refilled that I could use with Big Buddy heater. A few jugs of water and a 40 lb bag of rice I got from a friends restaurant when they closed (forever). 2 old lamps and 2 bottles of lamp oil, a solar/windup radio and a solar battery charger.

Neighbour keeps letting their cattle get into my place going to eat like a king. :)

Back in the winter of 98 (Ice storm) we lost power here on our farm for 28 day..no power also means no water in a rural area. It was a good wake up call and a great experience. We learned a lot about what you had to have on hand to be able to stay alive. Thankfully we had a fireplace and lots of wood so keeping warm was the least of or worries. .

Fortunately military training in Survival, Evasion and Escape and a Winter indoctrination course, I had a skill set that helped immensely. We were somewhat prepared, other that having to care for the livestock, an water for a couple horse alone was a major effort. We now have a hand pump in the yard over an old dug well.

My wife and I had dabbled with the 'prepper' movement back in the early 80' and were avid campers so our root cellar was stocked pretty well and we had all the needed Naphtha cook, light and heat equipment.

We really had no problem coping without TV, phones or computers. But the kids suffered, one daughter was particularly affected by lack of electronics. We had to drop her of at a friends home with power for a few days a week so she wouldn't go too mental. HaHa.

If you live in a smaller community, especially rural, it's worth checking with the Township and taking a look at the Emergency Measures plan. They often have some literature that has important contact info and information on what service will be available. Our Township has a pretty good and they were quick to open Fall Out type shelters so we could go in for showers, hot meal, use a phone etc. which was great.

As discussed on here before, generators are great for a 3-4 day stop gap, but as Mark has said it can (and did) last almost 30 days. You need to have a plan.

Haha, I think that’s going to be a real problem for a lot of farmers.

I would just move to my camp, should be alright. Lots of firewood, fish and wildlife.

Truthfully, I’d say we are better prepared than the vast majority, but not nearly as prepared as we’d need to be.

12-18 months of no electricity = a Mad Max situation in most areas.
