Got to the farm at first light.... Setup my decoy and ecaller about 40 yds out in front of me.... Started off with a quiet sounding dying rabbit sound for about 5 minutes.... then changed it up and went to my hand calls screaming out as loud as I could a dying rabbit/animal sound....
Let that scream out off and on for about about 5 minutes before I see these two coyotes (about 500 yds out) running hard through the open field toward me and my decoy :)
I reposition myself (shooting sticks) and get ready for them.... Now the first one must be hungrier because it is running super hard and way ahead of the other one.... For a minute I thought about songdog ( mentions he shoot the back one first) but not brave enough for that so concentrated on the first one...
As the first one comes over the rise it puts itself less than 60 yds away... I yell out wolf. wolf, wolf, trying to get it to stop but no it continues to run full speed right up to the decoy, instantly it figures something is up and starts running hard back to where it came from..... All this time I am trying to line it up in the scope and keep yelling out wolf, wolf wolf to get it to stop...... So without him stopping I take two shots at it and miss both times as it makes its way back from where it came from.... :(
Now the other coyote, ran too but I see it at about the 300 yds out just standing there wondering whats going on.... So I reposition myself in the prone position using a fallen fence post as a rest. I guess it feels comfortable enough not to be too worried because it just starts to walk not run across the field.... :silly:
I yell out a really loud, WOLF sound...... which gets him to stop..... I then crank up the scope, place the cross hairs over his back, remember thinking relax, the bullet will go where the cross-hairs are....so take your time..... I take a deep breathe and gentle squeeze the trigger and............... watch the coyote fall over............... turns out to be about a 275 yd shot and a big 48lb (bathroom scale) coyote.......A real good feeling because I went out yesterday and had a hard charger too and couldn't get it to stop either and miss the running shot putting a damper on the last day of 2020 :(... So putting some fur down today (first day of 2021)is a good feeling..... :)
