The lockdown joke

Wife asked me to pick up a few groceries on the way home yesterday. Walmart in Bowmanville was conveniently on the way.

I had heard that big box stores that sold food would be cordoning off the areas that were non-essential, and also heard that the non-essential areas would be open but the entire store would be operating at reduced (25%?) capacity.

neither of these measures in place. Parking lot and store PACKED, all areas open. If not for the masks and tape on the floor, it was business as usual.

no wonder the small business owners are furious.

One of the more stupid things to do and bandied about by "snowflakes". But as per the other thread and people not thinking.......Well that's our highly esteemed health officials..
The less consumers buy, the less contribution to GDP and tax revenue, the fewer staff are needed, the fewer warehouse and inventory people. The less work for those in purchasing and supply chain logistics. The less demand for truckers, and factory workers. Why make and ship widgets that aren't selling....

Yes we had to run into the one in Uxbridge on New year's Eve and it was rammed . Had to return Sunday night around 7 pm and it wasn't bad at that time.

Wish more was open to give me some better options lol.

73hunter, its a total joke whats going on. I can confirm its been like this for months here, nothing has changed.
The wife and I have been to Costco in the Shwa a couple times in the last month and its the same there business as usual, nothing much has changed.

well people are still working at other jobs, DR's, Nurses, Day cares, Schools etc. Many people buy a Coffee on the way to work or buy their lunch.

I personally would not want a sleepy Dr operating on me. My Wife works at a Day care and buy's her coffee.

I guess Tim's is essential just like heading south to the Caribbean during holiday lockdowns.
Think we're in debt now, wait for another year or two of this bs to continue and see where we're at. Going to be an eye-opener for many.

Stores that can sell multiple items to suffice the majority of needs are open, just like DR's can still work, Day cares .

Seeing as I work in food production, yes I'm aware.

I'm also aware that people are painfully entitled and lazy. How hard is it to make coffee, seriously? The number of people that depend on Tim Horton's to survive is just another peeve of mine from before the lockdown, so it's amplified now.

By your logic people should also eat at restaurants for every meal.

Not sure how closing hospitals relates to Tim Horton's being open...

You do realize many and probably most DR's, Nurses any medical person probably doesn't have time to make coffee. Especially at work. Quicker to send one person out. But I guess we could just let people die, heck like I said shut it all down then.

My Sister doesn't have time to get a coffee, they send one person to Timmies. Do you want a tired DR operating on you?

As well if you think the DR's are in on the gig I hope you will never ever you a Hospital or take any kind of prescription drug, no exceptions.

Who has the right to tell anyone what is essential ? If you need cloths, it's essential to you. If you need something to drink or eat, it's essential to you. If you need cleaning supplies or materials for craft work when you're in lock down, it's essential to you.

We are suppose to be living in a free society and allowed to make our own choices as to what is 'essential'. Why send anyone out it's faster to make a pot .

If they don't have time to make a coffee there is not time for them to loose a person for the amount of time it would.

There is a thing called a Thermos too . It will keep your coffee hot all day on the ice in sure they can manage.

In this time of discomfort DONUTS are basically an essential comfort food for the population, not to mention the devastating effect the loss of Donuts might do to our National security with no law enforcement officers turning up to work.

Without coffee and donuts the entire economy will grind to a standstill.

Timmy's is an essential medication/drug for some. My one buddy can't have a satisfying bowel movement unless he cranks two of their xlarge coffees. Goes through him like old chip fryer grease through a dump bear.

Really? If a doctor can't function without drinking coffee to stay awake we are in big trouble. It's called getting adequate sleep. Back in the day folks used a thermos to bring to work.

You do realize most Dr's are over worked some works well pass 24 hours this is very common knowledge.
Yeah many Dr's and Nurses do not get adequate sleep. My sister has done many 24 and even a 36 shift.
How many hours can you go?

I worked for 13 years in an avionics shop at an airline. There was a coffee maker in our shop that was always going. First person to arrive in the morning got it going. Nobody ever had to go out for coffee. Pretty simple solution.

I recommend you step up to the plate and tell the Hospitals you know how to run the place for them and that you are going to make the rules for them.
I realize you might not understand but sometimes when you are in high stress jobs sometimes you will expect some service. But heck Dr's don't have high stress jobs saving lives do they.

OK, my spin on it as I also work in hospitals. All major ones have at least one Tim Horton's somewhere within the facility as well as sometimes a Starbucks.
If not, the cafeteria has pots on the warming plate but usually not the best quality.

Medical professionals don't have time to brew a pot at work. A lot simpler to pick up a fresh cup before the shift. Same with truckers and many other trades. This is a convenience factor for our workforce at this time of lockdown. Police, paramedics, snow plow operators.....many depend on this drug.

It is obvious here that many working from home forget about our support personnel out there holding things down for us.

Yup, guess I’m old school too. I don’t have a Tim’s on the way to work so I’ve been making my own in a travel mug for years. And is probably still make my own if there was a Tim’s - lineups are long and I’m cheap.

I worked almost straight midnights for the past 12 years (4 weeks midnights and 2 weeks day shift). Caffeine drives the midnight shift.

Doesn't seem to be an issue for people who aren't allowed to leave the property at break time to supply themselves with coffee. The lazy people usually show up with a tray of Tim's to get through the night. They're ironically the same bunch who are usually whining about not being paid enough.

Often, they are more important..Back in the spring there was some hope society, would learn that every cog in the wheel is vital, and essential. From the lowly garbage collectors holding things down, to grocery store clerks so said people in healthcare can eat and have places to live and work....

Not really

Back to another point. I disagree with the small business lockdown while multinational corporations (Costco/WalMart) continue to operate business as usual. I have been to Costco during a lockdown and saw all the people packed in that store and there was zero room to social distance. The check out line was easily 80yds long before it split into individual check out stations. There is no control in these stores - none what so ever. A small independently owned business could stay open and operate while having 1 or 2 people in the store at a time and still offer 3x more room for social distancing compared to the big box stores.

Doug dropped the ball on this one. If he cannot allow the non essential stores to open he should have the big box stores not sell non essential items. You can easily rope part of the store off and simply put you cannot buy these items in store - order them online. They are only to sell essential items during the lockdown. This would at least level the playing field and probably reduce the number of people that are out buying non essential items when they should be at home isolating.

And at the very least, their revenue should be getting heavily taxed.

Some will argue it's easier to control numbers at big box. Maybe, but the trade off is condensing would be shoppers into just a few locations (super spread events) vs wide spread dispersion. But when health experts are asked for data from small business or about that side, or the numerous mounting cost..."crickets"

But who determines what an essential items are ? ...a nurse working 12 hr shifts may need new shoes, the guy working outside may need new gloves or coveralls. Mothers may need craft supplies for their stay at home kids or electronics support for the older kids trapped at home.

Actually the beginning of the pandemic was a great time to invest, just buying stocks you would have probably made 25%. My current investments still came out at 15.5%

Then just send an orderly to go get coffee from the machine instead of having to get someone to actually leave their workplace, go to Timmies and wait in line and then go back to the hospital. The OP hit the nail right on the head.The only thing i would add is-it is a TRAGIC joke ,for many.

"All"would accept the Lockdown -it it would apply to "all".
And that is where Doug screwed up .Many forgot or it is not "interesting 'anymore-or just a commonplace, where certain groups get full pay to stay home and almost -literally DO NOTHING.
Many businesses see and feel the effect of the closure-while the next business is flourishing.
Becasue they are "essential".

Tell your kids to give you lots of grandkids.

Driving down the main street of our little town everything closed down. Get out by Wal Mart and the parking lot is jammed. I thought as others have said that they are permitted to sell only essentials, looked to me like peoples carts had a mix of everything in them. I expect once Quebec closes after Saturday all of the border towns will be quite busy!

You do realize the Carbon Tax really doesn't do anything. It has not reduce CO2 and will not. In fact CO2 has gone up. Some countries have by technicality reduced their CO2 because they started importing natural gas from Russia. CO2 is calculated at the source so Russia goes up while another country goes down. In fact only one country has actually reduce their CO2 and that is the US.

Our Co2 tax is just a piggy bank for Trudeau.

That line in bold is by far, the issue I have. This is not a natural economic downturn, it's man made, "self" inflicted. Forced on about 30% of the population. Some are now calling for the "Australian model". I say fine, because at least then almost everyone is going to feel the pain. Lose jobs, income, and more will lose significant savings, and more their homes. I bet more people, get on board right fast.......Especially those that haven't lost a single nights sleep, let a lone a single dollar.

Alternatively ( see below article), we actually compensate those paying the prices. And we actually offset the cost ( rather than pass the buck onto our grandchildren). You know, take responsibilty for choices, own them and raise taxes and government revenue to help off set the cost, and adequately compensate people. I bet that too, would get people on board fast. That old expression, put your money where your mouth is. And for all those public servants, pay cuts. They too can feel and share the pain and help offset the cost and help those being thrown overboard.

Yes, it is important that people return to work and get some resemblance to normal life once again for mental health reasons.
However, how long will they be happy with reduced purchasing powers from lower wages and taxation?
Will the government withdraw all the luxury items from the list such as dream vacations, speed boats, muscle cars....etc to name a few in order to reduce temptations. Just the basic necessities of life will be available? Everything else will be supplied by the government? Healthcare, Pharmacare, post secondary education....etc?
