I lost my Maglite 2 D Cell and was about to replace it, found one on Amazon for 40 bucks LED.
It's 213 Leumens and can project a beam 464 meters.

But I started wondering if there is something better for the same price. Anyone know of a better LED flashlight for the same price something that projects even further and wider or is Maglite the way to go.
I'd be curious about the 464M beam distance. I've still got my 3D from 40 years ago, never failed yet.
Energizer and Coast also make good flashlight.
I like things that all work on AA batteries.
I like this one as it fits in my Carhart side pocket, great tough light.

One thing I have many of is flashlights. It's an item you really miss when you need it and don't have it. I've tried numerous different models and find this another case of "you get what you pay for". Personally if I'm in a situation where I need a light that I know will not fail I go for my Fenix. Check them out, you won't get one for $40 but they are tough. Fished mine out of 15 feet of water the day after I dropped it,.
The problem I find with most value lights is that they are great for the first two minutes before light output begins to wane.
The only issue I have with my Fenix light is that they generally don't take normal batteries. Rechargeable systems are most common and I'm horrible for losing cords and such and I can't swap batteries on the go should I run out of juice.

I can't remember the brand but I've had great luck with the little metal black flashlights that run on 1 AA battery. They sometimes have a hat clip on them, usually no bigger than 3" or so. Near the checkout at Canadian Tire. Just make sure they're the 1 AA version, not the 3 AAA version.

I have three lights I use on a regular basis - all three and great flashlights.
Browning Catalyst: Switching sequence On - Off. Powered by two Lithium CR123 batteries. On extended run times I had this light get hot and shut off on a couple of occasions.......that is why I bought the Fenix. I primarily keep this on my boat during the summer. Water resistant.
Fenix PD30: Switch sequence - On high beam - on low beam - flashing - Off. Powered by two Lithium CR123 batteries. Very powerful and versatile unit. Water resistant.
ThirFire X001CYKPM7: Switch sequence - On high beam - on med beam - on low beam - on ultra low beam - Off. This light is my favorite and is usually with me when I hunt, go camping, or on a long hike. Powered by a single AA 3.6V Lithium battery. This unit is water resistant, small and compact, very bright, and long lasting. At work we have some sample equipment that uses 3.6V Lithium AA batteries so I had a pile of them kicking around and decided to pick up a flashlight that uses this battery and I could not have been more happy with the purchase.
The CR123's are also very common batteries and I get decent life out of them. I typically get them out of BestBuy and pay around $20 for 6 of them. I tried the rechargeable CR123 batteries and they start to suck really quickly.

Not sure what all the hype is about Coast. I've found them to be a lousy product. Every one I've owned is toast after 1-2 years. Best deal by far for me- Amazon.ca - for about $50 bucks. Letion model LE -189D. You get two LED flashlights and the charger in the kit. Crazy bright on the high setting (1500 lumens. It works as a spotlight to half a km), adjustable beam, 4 modes (high, medium, SOS, and stobe). Good life on the battery. IPX4 waterproof rating. Solid aluminum barrel. Best light I've owned so far. I've had $200 LED Lenser lights that are inferior to these. I'll buy them again.

Just noticed this post GW. A friend of mine picked up 3 Bell & Howell Atomic Beam Tac lights and gave me one. I don't know what he paid for them but I've never seen any flashlight to match what this thing can do and I have had many Mag Lights of various sizes along with other brands.
Just Google Atomic Beam and you should come up with it. The light came with a throw away battery but I now have a rechargeable no. 5800mAh 3.7V for it. I suspect the price is about $30 - $40
I have a bit of an obsession with flashlights but I am nowhere near an expert. Thrunite is an excellent company for flashlights, I carry one everyday. I work on a maintenance crew and we all carry a Thrunite Tn12 that have been flawless over several years. They run on an 18650 rechargeable battery which gives excellent run times if you are not constantly running on turbo output. I have dropped it, used it in the rain, in high heat and low temps, never an issue. The newer version is the TC12 which doesn't even require a battery charger as it has a built in usb C charger. https://thrunite.com/tc12-v2/. I also have a thrunite headlamp that has been great.
There are a few things to consider though with the beam. There are typically "thrower" vs "flood" beams. Some lights offer a bit of both. For a general use flashlight a more floody beam is great. If you wan't something with more distance but some flood there are several in a "C8" form from different companies https://www.amazon.ca/Lumen-Convoy-C...5811073&sr=8-4. They are similar to the TC12 above but have a reflector size similar to the Maglights. I own one and it's great for dog walking as it throws several hundred yards but still fits in a jacket pocket.
Don't be afraid of the Chinese manufacturing anymore. Fenix makes a great light but at double the cost of companies that can produce a light that's just as good IMO (not a knock against Fenix). A few years ago I would not have thought that. If you can get yourself a decent charger you can start getting different lights with different batteries and you won't go back to the old C or AA lights when you see the performance difference.

I’ve had a coast light for 6 years plus and it has been great at a very reasonable price, I would also look at fenix as others have stated.
You can certainly spend $100-200 and get an extremely powerful flashlight from other brands.
Not sure what it is about flashlights but I’m the same way. Gotta have em.
Our company gives away logo-branded stuff at Christmas, flashlights are always a favourite, along with multi-tools & pocket knives

The only issue I see with that linked flashlight is its a double 18650 light. That would be rather long and not fit in a pocket very well. Something with one 18650 is ideal imo for a useful light (the one I carry everyday is that size as are most "every day carry" EDC lights. Very easy to find a holster for or carry in a pocket. Something like this linked one is the size I would prefer and though the lumens are bit less it is a very bright and useful light. I find I like to have a few different lights in different sizes really small (14500 battery) to EDC's (18650 battery) and then a few bigger powerful ones (multi 18650 or 26650). I keep them stashed in different areas (truck, night stand, front hall) and when it's deer season I pack a headlight and a powerful search light. Most chargers will handle a variety of battery sizes and are very reasonable in price as are batteries now a days. It makes it easy to swap batteries around to specific lights or simply buy a few extra if you find a good deal.

I use a headlamp. Got it on sale on Amazon 2 years ago, this thing literally will light up a field if you want it to. Or you can bring it down to a narrow beam or a wide beam. Or use all 5 lights if you want to lol. Makes the walk to the stand a little less paranoid for me LOLAttachment 41541

I had one very much the same design, it almost went on fire in my overall pocket, shorted out completely, the wiring inside is very flimsy I would be very wary of these units. I did send an incident report to Health Canada on these.Quote:

Yeh, I never took the batteries out, I recharged them on the solar panel and let them fully charge as I would use then after fishing walking back to my place. They are great light for illumination, but when I took them apart after the failure I saw how poor the quality of the wiring was. I think these could cause a fire if they accidently overcharged. Coast flashlights are also great. Readily available at CDN Tire & Home Depot. Lifetime warranty. Waterproof, very bright, and usually have 2-3 different modes as well as massive flood vs targeted spotlight option.

I’ve had great luck with the small Eliminator rechargeable spotlights CTC usually has on sale for $10.00 or so. They are waterproof, so one is in the boat. They are small enough to put in my hunting coat pocket.
Check these out. They come in a 2pk. I bought them a few years ago and they haven't failed,yet. Be careful not to shine them in your eyes. You'll see blue dots for 20 minutes.Quote:

I have 2 Maglite D cells that are over 15 years old, maybe pushing 20. Used them daily for home inspections for 6 years and still working great. A little heavy but I have always used a belt holder and you get used to it. Batteries last forever and so do the bulbs.
i have night core and not impressed but also have fenix headlamp and flashlight and life is better with these
