Crossbow recommendations

Now that the neighbors have gotten rid of their 24 hour a day barking it's fool head off dog, the deer are back and I'd love take a couple. The problem is there's no way I can shoot one because I'm in the city limits and there isn't enough distance between the deer and houses. I thought about bow hunting but the last time I used one, all I could manage was ruthlessly murdering the ground and not hit the target.


So that leaves a crossbow. I've looked at them and I'm clueless about modern models. I've seen compound and single string and don't know what to look at or for. That's where you all come in.

City limits ???? Are you sure you can even use a bow there ? Most firearms discharge bylaws include bows.....best check that out first .

So you're looking for a crossbow to shoot a deer within city limits in your backyard because the neighbours finally did something about their barking dog? And you'd like to shoot a couple of them?
Okay then. We're doomed.

He is from Buffalo. Different breed down there.

You can crossbow hunt within the town limits of Quispamsis NB, so this is not out of the ordinary. In Quispamsis the deer have become a complete nuisance you can easily find them in groups of 10 or more. During the day they cross at the lights for some reason they have not figured that out at night. I think you have to have access to a property greater then 2 ac but I cannot remember.

Other than the fact that one of my daughters lives in Quispamsis, it was a totally useless irrelevant post.
Greyson, as Rick posted earlier, check your local bylaws FIRST to see IF you can use anything in your locale.

The poster OP said he wanted to hunt within his town and some of you said he can't do it, I was pointing out it is done in some towns so to say it is not done where he is could be wrong.

Glad you two are so critical of others trying to learn about bow hunting in a legal way in their own areas.

Did you know that bow hunting is allowed within the city limits of Ottawa? Ottawa is a massive city, they have different discharge laws for different areas. They used to have hunters come in to cull deer in an area that is federal government land bounded by subdivisions on all 4 sides.

Nobody has said he can’t do it !!

To the OP:
It would be a very good idea to first be aware of the specific regulations and limitations that apply on crossbow hunting in NY.
A local bow shop could give you some savvy advise on this matter, and guide ya in the right direction...

Deer season is over but this one will be out in July. Plenty of time to practice before Oct 01st... :)

Amazing how far Cross Bow technology has come.....

Watch some you Tube Videos, in the US some county's let urban deer hunting with a bow only. Ive watched videos of guys hunting outside a dentist office after is closes with a busy road near by.

And to the OP i would recommend a Excalibur.

Come on guys.....listen to the OP. He asked about a good crossbow he was not asking for your advice on whether he can shoot it and hunt within city limits. We are so quick to judge, label and spew on about something we know little to nothing about - NY State Hunting Regulations.

Personally I prefer Excalibur - you might want to loot at the Micro series. I shoot the Micro 335 and personally love that bow.

This is a hunting forum, not a shooting deer forum.

You cant go wrong with Excalibur. Find a use one if money is an issue.

in the united states they have different open season dates for different states./

they even have something called a youth only season where only youth can hunt and harvest a deer.



the OP is asking about crossbow options not about if hes allowed to hunt where hes hunting. stop arguing about stupidness

Again, careful on the advises you give here... as NY has some very restrictive Xbow legal regulations. One of them is 200 lb max. draw weight.

With compound crossbows you get speed, easier to pull back, and they're quieter.

With recurves you get lighter weight and ease of maintenance.

I would avoid those 400+fps recurves though, their limbs simply wont last as long as a compound of the same price. For budget crossbows, Barnett, and killer instinct. For mid budget ($1000+) I'd recommend Excalibur, killer instinct, tenpoint, and barnett has some good ones too. The killer instinct SWAT and Micro series are good.

As for high end crossbows, Scorpyd and Tenpoint, ravin has good ones but they're always the most expensive.

Again, the OP is asking what we recommend - he did not mention any bow restrictions so we should not assume he is bound by any restrictions. Why is it so difficult for some guys to stop being nit picking old ladies and just offer your opinion on his question without throwing in your opinion on what you think he can or cannot legally do. That is probably why this forum is sucking arse as of late. We are not legally bound in any way, shape or form on the advice we give anyone. We are just offering our opinion of what bow we like in an Ontario hunting forum. It is 100% up to him to hunt legally in his area - NY, PA or Texas.

Me thinks the OP, like WTs has been spooked and fled.

I like Excals, and in particular the Micro 335. More than enough for the range I’ll pull the trigger. Small and compact enough it’s easy to carry, move around while in a blind, or stand.
