$636M in CERB benefits paid to 300,000 teens aged 15 to 17

When you know that this money was earned and paid to the government in taxes it's outrageous there was so little oversight as to how the CERB program was run. Huge waste by the Liberals.

The federal government paid more than 300,000 teenagers, many of them high schoolers, nearly $636 million in benefits over the course of the CERB program, according to documents from the Canada Revenue Agency.

While many Canadian teenagers and youths work before the age of 15 — delivering newspapers or babysitting, for example — the CERB program was available only to those over the age of 15.

The documents show that 40,630 15-year-olds were approved for the benefit. The government paid out $81.2 million for that group. There were 92,784 16-year-olds approved, receiving nearly $186 million, and 184,576 17-year-olds received $369 million.

Some kid making $5K a year ($450) a month was gives $2K a month in emergency benefits..while living at home !!!

For most of these kids the government basically paid them double what they would have made working. My son knows a few kids who actually quit their jobs to get the CERB.

well if your at the voting age and a teenage, who would you vote for ? Problem is most if not all of these kid's do not understand that through taxes they will have to pay this back. Heck most adults don't even understand that nor does Trudeau. When your rich like Trudeau and have never worked living off of Daddy's money you start to really believe that money just comes out of thin air.

You are right............ but they won't worry about it. They will have learned......just increase the debt... The next 20 yrs will be very interesting....

But what they will learn is some kid's who were smart and work hard will have money when they grow up. My youngest not even 16 yet has been working since he was 14 on and off has already put aside 5 grand for college and should have 20 - 25 K by the time he is 18. These other people will be the ones crying no fair in the future.

Unfortunately it will be kids like yours that will ultimately pay the price (taxes) because their the ones working :(

Yes but they will have a heft head start over the others. My kid's also know how to work, something very few Liberals including Trudeau know nothing about.

They will also be able to sell lots of stuff that is tax free money.

Quitting their jobs should have made them ineligible. To get CERB, they had to do weekly reports, and it would be a total breakdown of the system if the government ignored a situation where someone intentionally quit to get CERB ... CERB is there for people who lost their jobs or were placed on temporary suspension due to the circumstances ...

So unless those kids lied or didn't declare they intentionally quit ... they should claw back that money.

They likely will be clawing back the money on many but looking at the criteria and how many.

636,000,000/2000 and / 4 months = 79,500 teens... as a rough estimate

There are alot that would fit that, over 15, they couldn't work (seasonal or temp work say at parks, camping grounds, restaurants...), made more than $5000 in 2019 etc.

That number isn't good and seems poorly run as usual but atleast it went to people instead of say ... a "charity" that had paid the Trudeau family over $400,000.
