Early morning coyote...
Got to the farm just before daybreak. Stopped in to talk to the farmer for about 20 minutes or so then headed out. Setup a little after legal light and started calling right away. A strong North West wind was making me rethink my decision about getting out. Cold is okay but cold and a strong wind is not so good for me or for calling.
The plan was to sit here and call for about an hour hoping to catch a coyote coming across this field from the north before heading into the swamp/marsh south of me for the day but it turned out to be the opposite.
As the caller is screaming out dying rabbit sounds for 15 minutes or so, Once again the thought of going home creeps in as the wind is cutting into my face pretty good but as luck would have it, I look over my shoulder and see 3 coyotes about 300 yds out just looking in the direction of the caller and decoy.... One almost right away decides it's not for him and tucks back into the bush. The other two are just kind of not sure what to do so I decided to change up sounds in hopes of getting them committed but still nothing... As they look like they are about to leave I decide to play that wonderful pup distress sound and here they come...
One was definitely bigger and darker then the other. As they started coming in I was going to take the bigger darker one in the back but as it neared, I noticed looking through the scope that he had a rat tail. (Sure sign of mange) so quickly turned to the lead coyote and wolfed her to stop about 70yds out.....I took the shot and she dropped, tried to get on the other one as it was running away but missed the shot.... Looking back, maybe I should have shot the bigger one to stop the spread of the mange.... Oh well, maybe next time out. :)

Good shootin, seem to be a lot of yotes out that way. We’re trying to put a dent on them in WMU 88. Never seen so many tracks
